STEFAN Martin didn't want Steven May to be suspended for the bump that left the big Brisbane Lion unconscious, but says the Tribunal got the Gold Coast defender's penalty "about right".
May was banned for five weeks after running past the ball and collecting Martin at the end of the second quarter against the Lions.
However, the Tribunal found May had made severe impact to Martin's head.
"I wasn't really wanting him to get a suspension, from a personal point of view," Martin told News Corp.
"But in terms of reminding people about head-high contact, five weeks is probably about right.
"He plays on the edge of that aggressive line and maybe he overstepped it on this occasion.
"I remember the ball that I was chasing but not the incident. I just remember waking up below the Gabba in the doctors room.
"The way he conducted himself after the event was enough to let me know that he was pretty remorseful.
"I appreciate him reaching out to me during the week. In my limited dealings with him in the past, he's been a good fella."
Despite suffering headaches and a sore tooth in the wake of the hit, Martin has passed two concussion tests and says he is certain to play the Western Bulldogs on Saturday night at Etihad Stadium.
"I always thought I'd be good to go this weekend but I just had to wait and see if the symptoms got worse, which they didn't. I actually felt pretty good on the night watching the game in the second half," he said.
"I've been studying for hours every day and I've been able to really focus so that gave me a pretty good indication that I'd be able to play."
