DANE Swan's career is in doubt after scans confirmed he suffered three broken bones in his foot, including a Lisfranc fracture, early in Collingwood's horror loss to the Sydney Swans. 

Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said a prognosis would become clearer after the 2011 Brownlow medallist had surgery on his injured right foot.

"Swanny's had scans and he's got three broken bones in his foot and he's got the Lisfranc injury, which is not a great one," Buckley told Fox Footy.  

"And he will get the recommendations from surgeons over the next couple of days.

"We'll wait for the swelling to go down; he'll need an operation and we'll know about a timeline on the back of that."

Buckley added that Swan would almost certainly miss the majority of the season.

"It'll be late (in the season) if he was to come back, so we're about his welfare and looking after him in the short-term … (so he) gives himself the best chance to get himself right," he said.

Swan suffered the injury in the opening term of the Magpies' 80-point loss to the Swans, when his right leg buckled underneath him after colliding with Swans backman Zak Jones.

The 32-year-old was assisted off the ground by two members of the Magpies' medical staff and took no further part in the game.

Earlier this month, Swan said he was a "50-50" chance of continuing his career beyond this year, adding that form and how the team performed would determine his playing future.
