NORTH Melbourne's famous No.20 jumper will be put in mothballs in 2017 following Drew Petrie's departure to West Coast.
North announced last week Brent Harvey's No.29 jumper would be retired indefinitely after the League games record-holder's departure from the game, but it's understood the Roos have no plans to retire No.20.
The Kangaroos announced their remaining 2017 jumper numbers on Tuesday, with Marley Williams set to wear No.2 (previously worn by Noel Teasdale, Wayne Schwass and Leigh Colbert), Nathan Hrovat No.8 (Phil Krakouer and Daniel Wells) and Paul Ahern No.15 (Malcolm Blight, Peter Steward, Ross Smith and Nick Dal Santo).
Of North's draftees, Jy Simpkin will wear No.21, Declan Watson No.35 (John Longmire), Josh Williams No.36 (Stephen Icke), Nick Larkey No.40, Cameron Zurhaar No.44, Oscar Junker No.45 and Matthew Taylor No.46.
Kayne Turner will swap the No.40 jumper he wore in his first three seasons at Arden St for No.28, a number worn by his late father during his football career, while North recently announced Luke McDonald would switch from No.21 to the No.11 jumper made famous by Glenn Archer and Michael Firrito.
Petrie wore No.20 in all of his 316 games at Arden Street (second on North's all-time games list behind Harvey) from 2001-16.
One of the best contested marks in recent times, Petrie led the Kangaroos' goalkicking in five seasons and won All Australian selection in 2011.
Despite such a distinguished career, Petrie is not the biggest name to have graced the No.20 jumper. That honour belongs to former captain Wayne Schimmelbusch, who was one of the brightest stars of North's golden 1970s era.
Schimmelbusch played 306 games in No.20 from 1973-87, entrenching himself as a fan favourite with his never-say-die attitude and brilliant dashes up and down the wing.
'Schimma' captained North in more games (150) than anyone other than Wayne Carey and was named on a wing in the club's Team of the Century unveiled in 2001.
Petrie, who was informed late last season his contract at North would not be renewed for 2017, will play on at West Coast next season after the Eagles took him at pick No.29 in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
Other players to have worn North's No.20 jumper include Keith Miller (1944-51) and Peter Mann (1991-94).
