PORT Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas says he was concerned Jason Cripps' health scare would reopen old wounds, and remind the playing group of the tragic passing of teammate John McCarthy in 2012.
Cripps, the Power's list manager, was brought out of an induced coma this week after suffering a heart attack while running in Perth.
Thomas said he was worried about the emotional state of the Power players during the troubling week.
"For us and our group, that was tapping back into the J-Mac (John McCarthy) moment a couple of years ago, and I was really concerned for Jason and his family and the impact it was going to have on the club and the group," Thomas said.
Thomas has counselled the two club officials who first attended to a motionless Cripps.
Cripps, 38, was assisted at the scene by Port Adelaide staff and a doctor before being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
"I met with two guys who were first on the scene this morning for the first time," Thomas said.
"Just talking to them you could see the trauma that they'd been through and how close (and) desperate it was. And thankfully it has worked out."
As Cripps continues his remarkable recovery, Thomas said Power officials haven't held back ribbing the former St Kilda player.
"He will never live this down. We were bagging him because he's a very fit guy," he said.
"He's very proud of his physique. We will bagging the hell out of him forever."
