JEREMY Cameron can return to his All Australian form of 2013, his coach believes.
However, Leon Cameron is more concerned with ensuring his star forward is able to play injury-free after battling ankle problems last season.
The GWS coach said Cameron, 22, was enjoying a solid pre-season and looked to be over the problems that bedevilled him in 2014.
After kicking 62 goals in 2013, Cameron played 14 matches and kicked 29 goals last season. He battled a right ankle injury then suffered a perforated eardrum before having his left ankle operated on in July to ensure he would be right for 2015.
"We're really confident with the pre-season that he’s had that he can find that sort of form that he had in 2013,” Cameron told SEN.
But Cameron said he was more focused on the forward’s ability to play injury-free than being concerned about his form.
“[It’s more] that he can actually run freely, he can run out on the ground week-in, week-out … where he is actually not hampered by some of the issues he had with his body last year,” he said.
The Giants expect Cameron to get good support up forward from Adam Tomlinson and James Stewart – who had a setback during pre-season with glandular fever – and remain hopeful Jonathan Patton will return from his second knee reconstruction mid-season.
Patton, 21, made excellent progress in 2014, playing 19 games before injuring his knee against Melbourne in round 21. He required a second knee reconstruction.
He has been training alongside Tim Mohr, who is also on the way back from a knee reconstruction.
"We will take Jon probably the full distance and that will be round 10-12," Cameron said.
"[He's] really attacked it with great passion and energy and you can see that he is getting those rewards with the way he is training now."
