GOLD Coast has endured a tough few days, with forward Charlie Dixon undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ankle and midfielder Jesse Lonergan having scans on his right ankle following a training mishap on Wednesday.
Fullback Steven May also had surgery on a knee last week.
Key defender goes under the knife
In what appeared an innocuous incident at training, 20-year-old Lonergan stood on a teammate's foot during the warm-up before crumpling to the ground.
He was taken to hospital for scans and coach Rodney Eade said he would now be closely monitored by the club's medical staff.
"Jesse unfortunately suffered an ankle injury at training on Wednesday, however the full extent of his injury is still to be determined," Eade said.
The news came in the same week Dixon had minor surgery.
“We have been carefully managing Charlie’s training loads in recent weeks, but after consulting with our medical team, it was determined the arthroscopy would give him the best chance of recovery,” Eade said.
“We envisage he will be back running in three to four weeks.”
This is likely to limit Dixon's impact in the NAB Challenge, with the Suns' first match against Geelong in Townsville on March 1.
Lonergan has had a wretched run with injuries in his two seasons since being taken at pick No.13 in the 2012 AFL Draft.
He has broken both hands and had a series of hamstring injuries, managing just 13 senior games.
His teammates underwent an hour of match simulation at Metricon Stadium, with most players taking part.
Jack Martin was sensational through the midfield and half-forward in a game that was played in three thirds, while off-season recruits Nick Malceski and Mitch Hallahan also shone.
