LEIGH Montagna is set to miss St Kilda's season opener against Greater Western Sydney after scans revealed he required surgery on a torn medial meniscus in his left knee. 

Young defender Nathan Wright will also miss the round one clash with a torn adductor.

However, both Montagna and Wright are expected to be available to face Gold Coast in round two.

The two injuries were an additional blow in Thursday night's 106-point loss to Hawthorn in the final round of the NAB Challenge.

Montagna twisted his knee when he collided with a teammate and was subbed out in the third quarter.

He will undergo an arthroscope to trim the damage and will miss the next three to four weeks. 

Wright joined Montagna for scans on Friday morning and won't require surgery on the torn adductor he sustained when he was bumped while kicking in the second term.

It's another injury setback for the 21-year-old, whose first two seasons have been peppered with injuries sustained in collisions. 

The Saints have already lost the likes of Seb Ross, Farren Ray, Arryn Siposs and Daniel Markworth for the foreseeable future, and won't have Sam Gilbert available for at least the first six weeks of the season.

However, they're planning on having Josh Saunders and Shane Savage ready for round one after hamstring troubles. 

Saunders will play in a VFL practice match on Sunday despite developing hamstring soreness this week at training.
