AFTER a strong 2014, resolute Carlton defender Simon White is set to take another big step this season, his coach Mick Malthouse believes.
Answering fans’ questions as part of AFL Media’s #AskTheCoach series, Malthouse nominated White when asked which player had improved the most in the off-season and was ready for a breakthrough campaign.
"He had a good year last year, but Simon White," Malthouse said. "He's such a hard worker and deserves a break. Hoping he can keep going."
White played 19 games last season, the best return of his career, following a season-ending fractured vertebrae in 2013.
The veteran coach also praised youngsters Pat Cripps and Ciaran Byrne.
Malthouse said Cripps was making great inroads, while the Blues were "excited" about Irishman Byrne.
Malthouse also said Greater Western Sydney recruit Kristian Jaksch would give Carlton some extra flexibility.
He said the 20-year-old – traded from the Giants along with Mark Whiley and pick No.19 in exchange for pick No.7 – would play both forward and in defence.
"The really good thing about him is he has the capacity to play at both ends and that's supported by (Stephen) Silvagni who dealt with him at GWS," Malthouse said.
"Looking forward to playing him at both ends of the ground."
Malthouse, 61, is a three-time premiership coach, winning two flags with West Coast before collecting his third with Collingwood in 2010.
The 710-game veteran is on track to pass the legendary Jock McHale's record of 714 games coached. He should reach that milestone in the Anzac Day clash against St Kilda in round four.
