TYSON Goldsack admits he was surprised when he found out talented youngster Nathan Freeman had requested a trade to St Kilda.

However, the Magpie defender's rationale is simple: if you don't want to commit 100 per cent to Collingwood then there's no point being there.

"I'm not going to lie, it caught me by surprise a little bit," Goldsack said on Thursday.

"But everyone has their own views on a club or an environment where they might want to be.

"It's hard for me to say because I don't know how he feels or how it's gone for him the last two years.

"But if he wants to go then we probably don’t want someone at the club who doesn't want to be there 100 per cent."

Freeman, the No.10 pick in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, is yet to play a game at AFL level with serious hamstring injuries restricting his ability to get out on the field in the past two seasons.

The Magpies had been hoping Freeman, who possesses an exceptional burst of speed as well as an outstanding aerobic capacity, would complement the midfield of Scott Pendlebury, Jack Crisp, Dane Swan and Levi Greenwood, along with the likely arrival of Adam Treloar from Greater Western Sydney.

Collingwood's contract offer to Freeman was "unreasonable" according to the 20-year-old's manager, Paul Connors, and the Saints are set to capitalise.

Even still, Goldsack said he would've liked to see Freeman stick it out and prove himself as a top-line player at the Pies.

"You'd like to repay the faith. You'd like to be a one-club player and hopefully I'll stay that way," Goldsack said.

"It hasn't gone that way for him in his mind.

"Whatever he chooses to do I'm sure it's best for him."

Goldsack said he was delighted by the prospect of playing with Treloar. The emerging star told the Giants in September that he was seeking to be traded to the Magpies.

"It's a very exciting possibility," Goldsack said.

"To get a player of such quality to come to Collingwood would be very handy.

"We'll cross our fingers and hope it falls our way."
