Name: Daniel Currie
Height: 201cm
Weight: 96kg
Age: 26
Games: 4
Goals: 3
Drafted: Sydney Swans, 2006, No.49.
North Melbourne, 2012, No.56.
2015 trade: Joined Gold Coast for draft pick No.53.
What the 2015 AFL Season Guide said: Was trialled as a forward/ruckman alongside Todd Goldstein in three games early in 2014, but North abandoned the experiment after its attack looked top heavy. Currie's only other senior game was in round 23 against Melbourne when Goldstein was rested before the finals. The former Swan is a capable ruckman, but his senior opportunities are likely to be limited given Goldstein is firmly entrenched as the Roos' No.1 ruckman.
Where will he play? Currie will fill the void left by ruckman Zac Smith, who was traded from the Suns to Geelong on Monday. He can also drift forward.
State league form: Currie played the entire season with North's VFL affiliate Werribee, but missed nine games in the second half of the year with a foot injury. Despite the setback, Currie polled well in the J.J. Liston Trophy for the best and fairest in the VFL, finishing equal fourth on 11 votes – just four votes behind the winner.
Why North Melbourne traded him: Currie has been starved of opportunity since joining the club in the 2012 draft. Goldstein's durability has seen him ruck for almost entire games with little to no rest, limiting Currie of games for the Roos. North is also expected to retain out-of-contract ruckman Majak Daw for next season.
What is he good at? Currie provided strength at the centre bounces and stoppages in his 12 appearances in the VFL this season. Despite his lack of game time for North, his experience in the AFL system will be beneficial to Suns-listed ruckmen Tom Nicholls and Keegan Brooksby.
What does he need to work on? Currie is desperately craving more game time to demonstrate his capability at the elite level. His arrival at the Suns will also give him the chance to play in attack, taking full advantage of the expected departure of forward Charlie Dixon. If Currie can assume the No.1 ruck duties and contribute on the scoreboard, he will be a valuable addition.
