BRISBANE Lions great Jonathan Brown believes Etihad Stadium's surface near the boundary line is a workplace health and safety concern for the AFL.
Emerging Lions forward Michael Close will miss the rest of the season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sunday's clash with North Melbourne at Etihad.
Close sustained the injury when he landed awkwardly in a marking contest close to the interchange bench, where artificial turf meets grass.
"How bad's that? The AstroTurf going all the way to the boundary line, there's a bit of a lip there," Brown told Fox Footy.
"That's workplace health and safety for mine.
"There's enough hurdles out there and enough obstructions ... to be worried about how the footing is on the ground."
Brown suggested the club he won three premierships with in a stellar 256-game career was "very angry about it".
"I'm sure the players' association will be getting a call," he said.
News Ltd confirmed the Lions had raised concerns about the issue on Monday.
"The kid is all right. He will do the year and come back, but say he didn't get back - then you'd have an issue," Lions boss Greg Swann said.
"From the game's point of view they need to look at it. You don't want it happening again.
"We spoke to the AFL, just to put it on the record, we've had a close look at it and it happened after he clipped the edge of the AstroTurf."
Etihad's surface was often criticised in the years that followed its opening in 2000, with officials initially struggling to grow grass due to the roof.
Public complaints and concerns have been less prevalent in recent seasons, especially after the appointment of Paul Sergeant as chief executive in 2012.
