SOUTH Australian Malcolm Karpany has moved into contention as an early second-round NAB AFL Draft choice after his stellar end to the season.
Karpany, who averaged 24 disposals for his state during the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, has attracted the interest of clubs in the second round, including locals Port Adelaide and Adelaide.
The classy midfielder, who can also push forward, won the Alan Stewart Medal as best player in Woodville-West Torrens' SANFL under-18 Grand Final triumph last month.
He finished with 29 disposals, nine marks, seven inside-50 entries and two goals in a standout display, with many viewing Karpany as a top-30 pick.
As part of the deal to secure Jared Polec, Port Adelaide shifted down the draft order, and its first selection is No.21.
The Crows enter the draft two selections later at No.23, having gained the pick in exchange for trading midfielder Bernie Vince to Melbourne.
South Australia's under-18 coach Brenton Phillips said Karpany's improvement across the national carnival was excellent, and his ability to use the ball well at the big stages was notable.
Karpany's goal sense was also a highlight for Phillips, who recalled his ability to read the ball off the pack and convert scoring chances on his skilful left foot.
Through the season Karpany had a taste of senior SANFL action for Woodville-West Torrens, but also spent time with the reserves and under-18 side.
A number of South Australian draft prospects appear likely to be picked around a similar mark, including midfielders Trent Dumont, George Hewett and Luke Dunstan.
