"We really wanted to go tall early. The last two years, we've had a real influx of talls that we can develop and start filling some spots as some of our other guys get a bit older. We've got some talented sportsmen across the board like a lot of these guys who have been drafted … but their football output was all really strong." Brad Lloyd, general manager player management

Pick 17 – Michael Apeness
"We'd been tracking him throughout the early part of the year but he got more exposure when Tom Boyd went down. We well and truly knew about him before that but we thought he really flourished when he got the main job up forward. We thought he was the best contested mark we came across this year. Normally players take a few years to get over a knee [reconstruction] but he's come back in this year and what he produced is pretty impressive for a guy his size. He came back about 110kg and has slowly lost the weight, and I think we'll see his body really lean up over pre-season." Brad Lloyd
37 – Alex Pearce
"He could be developed as a forward; he's one who can swing either way so it's up to Ross (Lyon) and the development guys where they put him. We saw him play in both positions throughout the year and throughout quarters. We were really impressed with his footy but at 198cm, he ran about a 10-minute three-kilometre at the combine." Brad Lloyd
58 – Brady Grey
"He is a talented [sportsman] and I think that comes up in his psych profile – it came out really strong, the fact he's been able to do that [play state football, soccer and cricket], it shows his application, which he's applying to his footy now, so he's been talented in whatever he's turned his hand to." Brad Lloyd
70 – Matthew Taberner (promoted rookie)
