• Nine things we learned from round 14
• After the siren: The Tiger who got away
• Around the state leagues: Morabito stars, again
SCORES were up this week, which was a refreshing change, but with all of the great numbers posted, the Fantasy gods had to chime in with a few stinkers.
Lion Tom Rockliff racked up almost 100 points more than last week and his 172 is now the highest individual score of the year. Bernie Vince did his best on Sunday evening to knock him off, but fell three points short.
As we hit the second half of the season, let’s take a look at the events of another tough round that will see plenty of rage trades as soon as coaches log on this week.
Richmond v Sydney Swans, MCG
It may have been a scrappy game that has plenty of commentators calling for change, but we saw plenty of Fantasy points from our stars – especially from the Tigers.MID/FWD Dustin Martin (128) is having his best season to date posting his sixth ton in a row to take his average to over 100. Martin collected 22 kicks and 14 handballs to be the leading disposal winner on the ground.
With 52 points in the first quarter, Trent Cotchin (121) was later tagged by Craig Bird (64), with the Swan keeping him relatively quiet for the remainder of the game, including just one disposal in the last quarter. Unfortunately for coaches with Bird, he sacrificed his own game in his attempt to shut down the Richmond captain.
Anthony Miles (117) was a popular inclusion this week at $307,055. His third game for the Tigers was his best since being upgraded from the rookie list and it doesn’t look like the midfielder is leaving Richmond’s best 22 anytime soon.
Midfielder Josh P. Kennedy (107), FWD/MID Luke Parker (102) and underrated cash cow Harry Cunningham (100) were the best for the victorious Swans. Forward Lance Franklin (98) kicked four goals to keep his price heading north.
WATCH: Friday showreel - Lance FranklinStarting in the green substitute vest, Zak Jones (47) made immediate impact when he came into the game. The first round draft pick and brother of Nathan scored 39 points in the last quarter, the second most of any player on the ground.
Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs, Adelaide Oval
An eight-goal haul saw Jay Schulz (158) sit atop the Fantasy scorers for the match. Fellow forward Justin Westhoff (143) kicked three goals to go with his 25 disposals and 10 marks.WATCH: Saturday showreel - Schulz mauls the BulldogsCaptain Travis Boak (117) had a 30 disposal and two-goal game as the Power ran out 72-point winners.
Midfielder Kane Cornes (115) resumed his tagging duties after a fast start for Tom Liberatore (88). The Power midfielder was able to keep Liberatore quiet after quarter-time and collect plenty of the ball for himself, finishing with 30 disposals and a goal.
FWD/MID Robbie Gray (106) continues to rack up big Fantasy scores and will see his price around $500K for the first time.
Jackson Macrae (103) was the sole Dog to top three figures. DEF/FWD Shaun Higgins (96) had his best game for a couple of weeks after scoring back-to-back 50s.
Subbed out at half-time, Ryan Griffen (41) struggled with back spasms and owners will need to check on his availability for next week.
Hawthorn v Collingwood, MCG
At the traditional time of 2:10pm on a Saturday afternoon, whilst no one went huge, we saw some solid Fantasy scoring from most of our guns.Jordan Lewis (120) was the best as the Hawks ran away with the game in the second half.
The two Lukes, Luke Breust (104) and Luke Hodge (103) posted good scores. The former booted four goals while the captain took 10 marks.
Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury (106) racked up 35 disposals and fellow midfielder Dane Swan (102) was also impressive with 31.
Key forward Travis Cloke (102) has well and truly regained his form, finishing the match with five majors. He is now priced back over $400K, yet still offers value for those who think he can continue pumping out premium scores.
I’ve been waiting for the right time to upgrade Tom Langdon (15). It'll be this coming week, but Captain Hindsight tapped me on the shoulder and said I should have done it prior to this round. The DEF/MID has been fantastic this year, increasing by $258,233 since round one but he will experience a price drop this week.
Thank you Tom for your services, but with your price dropping and no certainty to line up next week, it’s time to go.
Gold Coast v Geelong, Metricon Stadium
The Suns are making their home ground a fortress and cementing their spot in the top eight as they defeated the Cats by 40 points.Former Cat Gary Ablett (137) kicked a goal late to boost his numbers but he found no trouble racking up his eighth 30-disposal game of the year. Those who followed Calvin’s advice this week enjoyed doubling his score as captain.
The second round of position adjustments is less than a fortnight away and Harley Bennell (155) has to be a chance to gain forward status. The midfielder kicked six goals for his best ever return at AFL level and as he has played predominantly in the forward line, he is likely to be listed as a FWD/MID in the lead-up to round 16.
WATCH: Revved-up Harley buries the CatsWe must consider Dion Prestia (132) as a serious Fantasy option. With scores of 116, 130, 107, 139 and 132 over the last six weeks, he is one of the form midfielders of the competition. Sadly for those of us without him, and that's 98 per cent of the competition, he’ll cost us more than $550K.Defenders Jarrod Harbrow (105) and Greg Broughton (101) scored unlikely tons while DEF/MID David Swallow (99) collected 27 disposals and draftee Kade Kolodjashnij (90) took nine marks to go with his 23 touches.
Steven Motlop (125) kicked three goals to lead the way for Geelong. Returning from his back injury, Steve Johnson (103) finished the game strongly with a 64-point second half.
Unfortunately it wasn’t Jimmy Bartel's night. His 60 points was his fifth lowest score since 2006.
Starting forward Joel Selwood (91) soon went into the midfield and worked his way into the game. He finished with 28 disposals.
The Fantasy community were licking their lips when they saw Shane Kersten (85) named for his first match. Although he won’t be that cheap after lockout, the $115,200 forward kicked the first goal of the game and finished with three in a very impressive debut that will see him as a very popular inclusion this week.
Essendon v Adelaide, Etihad Stadium
Gathering half of his disposals in the last quarter and stepping up when the Bombers needed it most, Brendon Goddard (147) backed up his career best Fantasy score last week with another fantastic return. The former Saint finished with 23 kicks, nine handballs and 12 marks on his way to be Essendon’s best player.Watch: Goddard leads the Dons to victoryGoddard was well supported by fellow midfielders Brent Stanton (103), Dyson Heppell (102) and Jake Melksham (101).
One of the best performances of the night came from defender Michael Hibberd (101). He has been one of the most consistent players this season and despite a knock to his shin in the third quarter that saw him spend some time off the ground, he was able to notch up a ton and his ninth 90-plus score for the year. Hibberd is in doubt to play Geelong on Friday night.
Crow Scott Thompson (149) had a mammoth 41 disposals and Sam Jacobs (112) was the most dominant ruckman on the ground.
Week in, week out Patrick Dangerfield (79) battles hard for his team. In the second quarter a corked quad slowed him up and as a result, he scored his fifth score in a row below 100 after averaging 122 in the month prior. The FWD/MID might need a rest, but that would be doubtful with the Showdown next weekend.
Fremantle v Brisbane Lions, Patersons Stadium
His side may have kicked just three goals and lost by 83 points, but Tom Rockliff (172) didn’t let the wet and windy conditions stop his Fantasy scoring. The midfielder racked up the highest score of the season thus far thanks to 45 disposals – including 26 kicks and 19 handballs – and a huge 12 tackles. Even when Ryan Crowley (81) went to him late, the points kept coming. This was a welcome score after just 75 last week where quite a few backed him in as captain against the Giants.
Rockliff’s partner in crime, Jack Redden (117), gained 60 of his points in tackles laying a game high 15.
Coming up against the partnership of Aaron Sandilands (90) and Zachary Clarke (90) is a tough task for any ruckman. Stefan Martin (111) won his fair share of hit-outs and found the ball 20 times as well as laying nine tackles. This was an awesome result for coaches who have jumped on the Lions’ number one ruckman in the absence of Matthew Leuenberger and Trent West. The RUC/FWD has scored 99, 100 and 111 in his three games.
Whilst these guys were great despite the loss, if you had any other Lions in your side, you have every right to be disappointed.
DEF/MID Pearce Hanley (47) has been a popular inclusion over the last couple of weeks but struggled with the Crowley tag before he eventually went to Rockliff. Dayne Zorko (43) appears in over 37,000 teams and has frustrated his owners over the last month averaging just 63 points in his last five games. With his price dropping rapidly, it might be time to trade him out.
For the victors, Lachie Neale (124), David Mundy (119), Nathan Fyfe (108) and Michael Barlow (104) were the major ball-winners in the trying conditions.
GWS v Carlton, Giants Stadium
The Giants recorded their fourth win of the season with their triumph over Carlton and it was Shane Mumford (139) who won the Fantasy battle. The ruckman collected 55 hit-outs, 18 disposals and nine tackles for his highest Fantasy score of the season and his first ton since round three.Callan Ward (127) appears in less than three per cent of teams. His 29 disposals and eight tackles took his average over the last month to 124.5, one of the best in the competition. Dylan Shiel (111) posted his third ton on the trot thanks to his 21 disposals, 10 tackles and two goals. FWD/MID Mitch Robinson (129) was Carlton’s best with 31 disposals. The last two matches has been a return to form for the 25-year-old as he regains the form that made him a top forward in 2011 and 2012.
WATCH: Match highlights - GWS v CarltonFantasy coaches were looking for some ‘Bugg-spray’ as Kade Simpson (26) struggled with the attention from Greater Western Sydney tagger, Tomas Bugg (28). The second highest averaging defender was held to just five kicks, six handballs and one tackle by Bugg who didn’t give him the freedom he is used to. There would be no +6 mark-kick combos for Simpson this week.
The 80 per cent of Fantasy coaches without him will be licking their lips as his price will drop over the next couple of weeks as he hasn’t scored over 100 since round 11.
Carlton captain Marc Murphy was withdrawn prior to the bounce due to hamstring tightness he suffered in the warm-up.
St Kilda v West Coast, Etihad Stadium
Low scores of late from Leigh Montagna had plenty of his owners hitting the trade button. For the 7444 coaches still with him, he caused headaches this week not for a low score, but for not suiting up. The midfielder was withdrawn prior to the match through illness. After a slow start, the Eagles ran away with a five-goal win thanks to an impressive game from Mark LeCras (112) who led the way with 25 disposals and a goal late in the game.
Matt Rosa (109) didn’t have too much trouble finding the ball, having it in his hands 37 times to be the leading ball-winner on the ground. Forward Jack Darling (90) kicked three goals.
Also kicking three goals, first-round draftee Jack Billings (119) played his best game of the year to provide Saints fans something to smile about. He dropped $13K last week but the FWD/MID will find his value at over $300,000 this week to provide a cash injection for this 11,016 coaches.
A far cry from the 125 and 148 he scored in the opening two rounds, Nick Riewoldt (72) has now dropped over $160K to bottom out at around $400,000. If you are looking for a cheap, fallen-premium forward, he could be your man but it might be worth saving your dollars for a player who is scoring consistently higher.
He may have made his breakeven but Xavier Ellis (51) frustrated his 41,558 coaches with another red vest to slow down his cash generation.
Melbourne v North Melbourne, MCG
In the last game of the round, Bernie Vince (169) had a day out, amassing the highest Fantasy score of his career. After a massive first quarter that included 14 disposals and two goals, he went on to have 41 disposals to be the second highest Fantasy scorer of the weekend.Levi Greenwood (127) is one of the form midfielders of the competition. His 30 touches, eight marks and two goals takes his average over the last five games to 125.
Defender Scott Thompson (121) took 12 marks to go with his 30 disposals as the general down back while Jack Ziebell (115) took nine marks.
If Drew Petrie (108) straightened up in front of goal, not only would the Roos have won by more, but his Fantasy score would have been huge. He kicked one goal and five behinds taking 11 marks in the process.
Andrew Swallow (84) only had 19 points in the first half, but a 51-point third quarter boosted his score. Unfortunately he didn’t finish the game on the ground after twisting his knee in a tackle. Coaches will need to monitor his availability during the week.
How did the Traders go in round 14?
My Warne Dawgs finished up with 2115 which was probably a little less than the norm for this round. This saw me drop some important league games and drop a bit in the overall rankings. My great scores from Captain Gary Ablett, Brendon Goddard and Dustin Martin were counterbalanced with Kade Simpson, Dayne Zorko and the red-vested Tom Langdon.Roy’s boy ‘Rocky’ and his massive 172 made his score respectable for the week, despite numerous players scoring below their average. His inclusion of Stefan Martin on his ground this week helped boost his score to 2201.
Calvin is happy with his Calvinator’s final score of 2184. He wore the poor scores from Simpson and Zorko but enjoyed the 274 points from his captain Gary Ablett.
