ADELAIDE is interested in securing respected Hawthorn defender Kyle Cheney as it looks to bolster its defensive depth.

 

Cheney played just 27 games in his four years at Hawthorn after joining the club from Melbourne, however he impressed watchers with his competitiveness in nine games in 2014.

 

He filled the breach when Hawthorn's tall defenders Josh Gibson and Brian Lake were missing with injury and suspension, punching above his weight and bringing the ball to ground against the game's best forwards.

 

A noted team player, he has played 41 games and could lend poise and experience to the Crows.

 

Meanwhile, Allen Christensen should become a Brisbane Lion on Monday with the Cats to receive pick 21 in exchange for the premiership player.

 

The Lions have added Jack Crisp to picks 5 and 25 in a package they hope will be good enough to convince Collingwood to hand over Dayne Beams. Crisp is out of contract and happy to return to Victoria.

 

The Magpies might want to consider that deal as it would allow them to use pick 25 to acquire Levi Greenwood from North Melbourne and push hard late to get an established player with pick No.5. 

 

Industry speculation suggests the Magpies might engage in discussions with Greater Western Sydney in relation to Beams, having left the door open for other clubs to enquire about its star midfielder. 

 

Promising Sydney Swans forward Tim Membrey will get to St Kilda either through the trade period or as a delisted free agent if a deal is not struck. The Swans understand the situation and are waiting patiently for the Saints to get a better picture of what draft picks they may have in their hands to use in exchange for the tall forward.

 

St Kilda is still open to negotiations around the number one draft pick with the situation still fluid. AFL.com.au understands that the Western Bulldogs remain keen to get their hands on one of the first two picks to secure a quality tall.

 

The Bulldogs have pick No.6 but could also acquire pick No.4 and another pick for former skipper Ryan Griffen, who requested a trade to Greater Western Sydney on Thursday.

 

If the Bulldogs were able to put two picks inside the top 10 on the table for pick No.1, a swap would come under serious consideration.

 

Adelaide on-baller Jarryd Lyons has a decision to make about his future with the Crows indicating he remains a required player. St Kilda has expressed some interest in Lyons if he decides he wants to seek further opportunities elsewhere.

 

Lyons, 22, has played just 22 matches in three seasons with the Crows but played very well in the last four games of the season and would have some value in the marketplace.

 

West Coast ruckman Callum Sinclair looks more likely than not to be staying at the Eagles. There had been interest in the talented young tall who is third in line behind Nic Naitainui and Scott Lycett but has the ability to take an opportunity at the Eagles if an opportunity arises.

 

Adelaide and Essendon remain open to securing a ruckman during the trade period with Jonathan Giles and Luke Lowden seeking opportunities.

 

Carlton remains hopeful of securing Kristian Jaksch (pick 12 in 2012 NAB AFL Draft) and Mark Whiley and pick No.19 from Greater Western Sydney in exchange for the Blues' pick seven.

 

Given two of the selections preceding pick 19 have already being used in the father-son and academy bidding meeting it would effectively be pick 17.

 

However the Blues might have a fight on their hands to get Jason Tutt.

 

Tutt requested a trade from the Bulldogs after just 26 games in four seasons and identified Carlton as his preferred destination. However coach Brendan McCartney's resignation on Friday has thrown that trade up in the air.

 

AFL.com.au understands the Bulldogs are keen to retain the 23-year-old.
