Adelaide

State league affiliate: Adelaide (SANFL)
This weekend: Adelaide v Port Adelaide - Sunday May 17, 1.10pm, Balaklava Oval

Of the nine AFL-listed Crows to take the field, emerging half-forward Riley Knight was named among the best in his first appearance of the season.

The 20-year-old, who had ankle surgery in February, collected 25 possessions and six marks in the Crows' 35-point defeat. 

Experienced campaigner James Podsiadly also made a successful return from a lower back injury, collecting 19 disposals, five marks and five rebound 50s in defence before drifting forward late in the match.

Rookies Jack Osborn (four goals) and Keenan Ramsey (three goals) were focal points in attack.

Brisbane Lions

This weekend: Brisbane Lions v UWS Giants - Sunday May 17, 12pm, Coorparoo

Utility Rohan Bewick led the way for the Lions with 31 possessions (16 kicks, 15 handballs) in the 38-point loss.

Rookies Zac O'Brien (24 touches), Jordon Bourke (21) and Hugh Beasley (18) also found the ball.

In attack, Liam Dawson registered four goals to go with his 14 touches and six marks, while rookie Matthew Hammelmann booted two goals from his eight disposals.

Carlton

State league affiliate: Northern Blues (VFL)
This weekend: Northern Blues v North Ballarat - Saturday May 16, 1.15pm, Etihad Stadium

Matthew Kreuzer had 10 disposals and 18 hit-outs to get through his second game in succession without drama.

"No one is expecting miracles for big 'Kreuz', the main thing is he's out there and getting some valuable game time," Northern Blues general manager Garry O'Sullivan told AFL.com.au on Sunday.

North Ballarat managed to outclass the Blues despite the presence of Liam Jones, Blaine Boekhorst and Robbie Warnock.

Nick Graham was Calton's best with 19 disposals and will be in the mix for promotion once again. Jones kicked the first goal of the game but did not trouble the scorers again.  

O'Sullivan said rookies Bradley Walsh and Tom Fields showed promising signs and could come into contention should the Blues decide to blood youngsters.

"Playing down back, (Fields) acquitted himself very well, he's got a wonderful big left booming leg on him," he said.

Collingwood

State league affiliate: Collingwood (VFL)
This weekend: Richmond v Collingwood - Sunday May 17, 11.42am, Punt Road Oval

Attacking midfielder Ben Kennedy was rested in the fourth quarter after experiencing tightness in his right quad. 

The 21-year-old was a standout performer in the first half with 19 touches and four marks, before finishing with 22 disposals in the Pies' thrilling three-point win over Richmond. 

Livewire Alex Fasolo was solid in the middle and up forward with 11 touches and a goal to half-time, but didn't feature in the second half to assume AFL emergency duties at the MCG.

Omitted Pie Sam Dwyer responded well with 21 touches through the midfield. 

Defender Ben Reid didn't take part in the match, with the Pies taking a conservative approach in his rehabilitation from a quad injury.

Essendon

State league affiliate: Essendon (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Box Hill Hawks - Saturday May 16, 12pm, Windy Hill

Tayte Pears make a solid contribution in his return from injury to kick three goals but it was not enough for the Bombers to defeat the Box Hill Hawks.

Essendon struggled to hit targets when under pressure and the Hawks scored from the turnovers they created. 

Jayden Laverde impressed as a defensive forward and may press for senior selection with the Bombers crying out for a player of his type. 

Ariel Steinberg and James Gwilt battled hard in defence.

Fremantle

State league affiliate: Peel Thunder (WAFL)
This weekend: South Fremantle v Peel Thunder - Saturday May 16, 2.15pm, Fremantle Oval

The usual suspects dominated with utility Tendai Mzungu finishing with a game-high 29 touches (20 kicks, nine handballs), nine tackles and two goals.

Draftees Connor Blakely (28 touches) and Lachie Weller (24) continued their recent good form in Peel's 44-point win.

Ruckman Jonathon Griffin controlled the ruck duel with a game-high 38 hit-outs and four inside 50s, while rookie Jacob Ballard (26 touches) and draftee Ed Langdon (25) also contributed well.

Geelong

State league affiliate: Geelong (VFL)
This weekend: Footscray v Geelong - Saturday May 16, 2pm, Whitten Oval

Dawson Simpson, George Horlin-Smith and Jackson Sheringham were the only players with AFL experience in the team and it showed.

Jordan Cunico showed pace at times and kicked a nice goal while Jarrad Jansen battled hard and tackled well.

However the defending premiers were too good in the end, defeating the Cats by 62 points.

Gold Coast

GWS

This weekend: Brisbane Lions v UWS Giants - Sunday May 17, 12pm, Coorparoo

Midfielder Josh Kelly amassed a game-high 36 possessions (21 kicks, 15 handballs) and kicked three goals in an impressive display.

Rebounding defender Curtly Hampton generated plenty of run with 35 disposals (19 kicks, 16 handballs) in the Giants' 38-point victory.

Youngster Jack Steele had 33 touches (11 kicks, 22 handballs) and 11 tackles, while Dylan Addison gathered 21 disposals.

Forward Jed Lamb led the goalkicking with five majors, with ruckman Rory Lobb adding three goals.

Hawthorn

State league affiliate: Box Hill Hawks (VFL)
This weekend: Essendon v Box Hill Hawks - Saturday May 16, 12pm, Windy Hill

Jed Anderson responded well to his demotion with four goals in the team's excellent 23-point win over Essendon. 

The Hawks' rookie tall Sam Grimley also chipped in with three goals. 

Melbourne

State league affiliate: Casey Scorpions (VFL)
This weekend: Port Melbourne v Casey Scorpions - Saturday May 16, 2pm, North Port Oval

Jack Watts and Jordie McKenzie were Casey's best players in a scrappy performance against Port Melbourne.

McKenzie won the ball and did a good job on Port's Tom O'Sullivan while Watts kicked a nice goal but also gave one up in the last quarter when his kick was smothered and Port Melbourne gathered the ball and ran into an open goal.

Watts solid in VFL after 'dropping himself'

Mark Jamar is struggling to mark up forward and Max Gawn battled to have an impact although both dominated the hit-outs.

North Melbourne

State league affiliates: Werribee, North Ballarat (VFL)
This weekend: Werribee v Williamstown - Sunday May 17, 2pm, Avalon Airport Oval; Northern Blues v North Ballarat - Saturday May 16, 1.15pm, Etihad Stadium

Trent Dumont was outstanding against the Northern Blues as they ran out 22-point winners at Etihad Stadium.

North Ballarat started slowly but took over the game after quarter-time.

Joel Tippett and Sam Durdin were impressive in defence, once again keeping pressure on the Kangaroos' defenders.

For Werribee, experienced defender Scott McMahon performed well with 17 disposals, including 10 in the final term.

Rookie Will Fordham showed promising signs with 25 possessions, while Kayne Turner's defensive pressure was solid.

Big man Majak Daw (12 touches) registered three goals to help his team claim a gripping two-point win, while fellow tall Daniel Currie (13 touches) had a good first half.

Port Adelaide

This weekend: Adelaide v Port Adelaide - Sunday May 17, 1.10pm, Balaklava Oval

Versatile tall Paul Stewart provided plenty of run, gathering 31 touches, taking 13 marks and kicking a goal in the Magpies' 35-point win.

Midfielders Aaron Young, (31 possessions, nine clearances and one goal) and Brendon Ah Chee (25 possessions) responded well to their AFL omissions.

Forwards Jake Neade and Jesse Palmer booted three goals apiece, while Logan Austin, Sam Gray, Mitch Harvey and rookie Johann Wagner slotted two goals each.

Richmond

State league affiliate: Richmond (VFL)
This weekend: Richmond v Collingwood - Sunday May 17, 11.42am, Punt Road Oval

Half-forward Matt McDonough was a standout performer with an equal game-high 29 possessions to go with three goals.

Rookie Matt Thomas was also among the major ball winners, collecting 27 disposals in the Tigers' three-point loss.

Omitted forward Nathan Gordon kicked two goals, including a nice snap from the pocket in the second term.

Forward Sam Lloyd also chimed in with two majors, while ruckman Shaun Hampson missed a couple of set shots but registered a goal late in the final term.

A Richmond spokesman told AFL.com.au Reece Conca got through unscathed after overcoming a hamstring concern. The midfielder played out four quarters between half-back and the midfield.

St Kilda

State league affiliate: Sandringham (VFL)
This weekend: Frankston v Sandringham - Sunday May 17, 2pm, Frankston Oval

Midfielder Farren Ray made an encouraging return from a two-month hamstring injury, collecting 28 touches on the wing and in defence in the Zebras' 75-point win.

"When Farren was on the wing, he worked pretty hard into defence, linked up and gave us an option coming out of defence as well," Sandringham coach Paul Hudson told AFL.com.au on Sunday.

Midfielder Tom Curren was another strong performer with 31 touches, while small forward Ahmed Saad registered four goals, but had the chance to put more damage on the scoreboard. 

"He (Saad) was pretty good the week before with the pressure and chasing and he did that again today," Hudson said.

"He missed a pretty easy set shot, so he could’ve had five or six (goals)."

Forward Tim Membrey kicked three goals, while Tom Lee, Blake Acres and Darren Minchington added two each.

Sydney Swans

State league affiliate: Sydney Swans (NEAFL)
This weekend: Sydney Swans v Southport - Saturday May 16, 2.20pm, Blacktown International Sports Park

Craig Bird had 34 disposals as the Swans' reserves dominated the Southport Sharks to win by 52 points. Bird was tagged throughout the day but kept winning the ball and kicked a goal. 

Zak Jones was very good with 22 touches and Harry Cunningham kept his name in front of selectors with 23 disposals.

West Coast

State league affiliate: East Perth (WAFL)
This weekend: Claremont v East Perth - Saturday May 16, 2.15pm, Claremont Showgrounds

East Perth struggled to adapt to the blustery conditions, managing just two goals for the match in the 39-point loss.

Ex-Blue Kane Lucas finished with a team-high 27 touches (13 kicks, 14 handballs) as he continues to push for a senior debut with the Eagles.

Midfielder Brant Colledge had 18 disposals (12 kicks, six handballs), while emerging defender Tom Barrass collected 19 touches (14 kicks, five handballs).

Western Bulldogs

State league affiliate: Footscray (VFL)
This weekend: Footscray v Geelong - Saturday May 16, 2pm, Whitten Oval

Jack Macrae had 34 disposals in Footscray's impressive win over Geelong at Whitten Oval. The talented midfielder showed his class, winning the ball well and using it effectively.

Nathan Hrovat and Jarrad Grant were very good with four goals apiece while Will Minson battled manfully in the ruck against Dawson Simpson, winning 20 possessions. 

Shane Biggs and Sam Darley were also solid, creating run out of defence.
