CHAMPION Gary Ablett's season is over after scans on Monday confirmed the Gold Coast captain requires left shoulder surgery.

AFL.com.au takes a quick look back at some of the dual Brownlow medallist's highs and lows in his chequered injury run since 2014.

Round 16, 2014: The Brownlow Medal favourite created shockwaves after his left shoulder popped out of its socket against Collingwood in a Brent Macaffer tackle, which required a major reconstruction.

Round 1, 2015: After an arduous pre-season, Ablett received his first test in the season-opening clash against Melbourne. The skipper looked underdone but kicked back-to-back final-quarter goals to help lift the Suns.

Round 2, 2015: Ablett collected 23 disposals and a goal against St Kilda, but again, performed well below his best, and was ruled out indefinitely in the ensuing days to nurse his shoulder.

Round 14, 2015: He returned 11 weeks later in the home clash to North Melbourne and burst onto the scene in brilliant style with 31 touches and three goals in the 55-point win.

Round 16, 2015: The star midfielder continued to show no signs of the shoulder complaint, laying a career-best 17 tackles and kicking three goals in the loss to GWS at Metricon Stadium.

Round 17, 2015: Ablett hit another roadblock, substituted out against Adelaide with a medial ligament injury in his left knee after teammate Matt Shaw cannoned into him. It was his last game for 2015.

December 2015: He took a significant – but short-lived – step in his rehabilitation in mid-December, rejoining the main playing group at training and taking part in his first full-intensity session since the middle of the year.

Round 1, 2016: Despite not featuring in the NAB Challenge series due to an untimely pre-season tendon injury in his foot, Ablett took on Essendon and inspired his side to victory with 34 touches and a goal.

Round 14, 2016: The champion took another step towards recapturing his best form, accumulating 40 disposals (25 contested), 15 clearances and a goal in the loss to Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium.

Round 16, 2016: Two years and four days after Ablett's initial dislocation, the 32-year-old sustained another season-ending left shoulder injury while attempting to tackle Brisbane Lion Mitch Robinson in the QClash.
