GREATER Western Sydney will have to wait on further assessment of star ruckman Shane Mumford’s knee before it’s known how serious the injury actually is.

Mumford hobbled off in the final term of the Giants’ 19-point win over Port Adelaide on Sunday after appearing to tweak his right knee.

Coach Leon Cameron said the ruckman wanted to return to the field late in the game, but that the club was unsure just how significant the injury is.

“He came off obviously with his knee, he then said he wants to go back on with about three minutes to go. We didn’t risk him…he was jumping around and said everything was fine,” Cameron said.

“We’ll test him…it’s a little bit unknown.

“He’s obviously a big part of our footy club so we’ve got to see how he pulls up over the next few days.”

Cameron described his side’s win as its best of the year, and that it would hold it in terrific stead come finals.

The Giants upped the ante in the second half and eventually won contested possession by 29.

The win pushed the club to second on the AFL ladder.

With finals football renowned for its tough, contested style, Cameron said the victory in really difficult conditions was proof for the players that they are capable of winning hard.

“I think we’ve probably gotten over that tag now as ‘just some classy footy players’,” he said.

“That’s the thing I’m really proud of our players today; I thought it was our best win for the year.

“Our boys found a different way to win…it was a really great solid effort.

“That, to me, shows a club wants to go the extra yard. Where we finish is where we finish - I thought today we grew up a bit more.

“There’s no doubt though, that to win today on the road has helped the boys’ confidence immensely."
