BRISBANE Lions assistant coach Simon Black will step away from his full-time position at the end of the season.

The Lions have had a horror year on the field, winning just two matches for the season.

Senior coach Justin Leppitsch is contracted for 2017 but speculation is mounting on whether he will see out his full term, with the club announcing it is to conduct an end-of-season review of his position.

Black told lions.com.au he would focus on his private Simon Black Australian Rules Academy next year, after having coached at the club since his retirement in 2013.

"I'm looking at stepping back from a full-time role at the club," Black said.

"I've set up an academy recently in the last 12 months. We're looking at expanding it a little bit, and when you've got your name attached to it, you've obviously got to have a degree of presence.

"Despite the win-loss ratio this year, I've really enjoyed the coaching role.

"It's been a really, really tough decision to get to this point."

Black was a champion midfielder for the Lions during its glory years when the club won three consecutive premierships in 2001-03.

"I'll still be around. I hope to have some sort of small role with the club still next year. I've still got to work out what that may look like," the midfield coach said.
