GEELONG is confident skipper Joel Selwood will be fit to play against Richmond next Saturday despite limping from the field after rolling his left ankle in Friday night's clash against Sydney at Simonds Stadium.
Cats coach Chris Scott said the medical staff had given a good report on the state of the key midfielder's ankle after Selwood finished the game sitting on the bench with his foot on ice.
"I'm actually confident enough now to say he'll be fine," Scott said.
"Clearly in the last quarter the discussion was around whether we should be pushing him through and make his chances of playing next week lower. So, given that, we sit here pretty confident that he will be OK."
Five talking points: Geelong v Sydney
Selwood was on crutches after the game but his foot was no longer wrapped in ice.
The initial injury occurred in the second quarter when Selwood appeared to stand on the foot of teammate Zac Smith in a marking contest and was instantly gripped with pain as he sought assistance from the club's medical staff.
The Geelong captain could not put any weight through his left foot as he went down the race and into the changerooms to seek treatment.
Selwood had his ankle strapped at half-time and returned to the action at the start of the second half, but re-injured it late in the third quarter when his leg got caught in a Lance Franklin tackle.
