SYDNEY was the circuit breaker in a deal to send Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern to Carlton, with the trade finalised with the AFL on Wednesday.

In what looms as a big day for those at Ikon Park, the Blues are also set to unveil the free agent signing of Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo on a three-year deal later in the day.

AFL.com.au understands Carlton and Adelaide reached a breakthrough in talks over McGovern on Tuesday night, with the official paperwork lodged on Wednesday morning.

As part of the deal, the Blues will send picks No.26 and 28 to the Swans in exchange for pick 13.

That earlier draft selection will then be sent to the Crows in exchange for McGovern, along with the rights to mature-aged SANFL prospect Shane McAdam.

Adelaide also gets a future fifth-round pick, while the Blues get a future third-round selection.

The acquisition of two second-round picks will also assist Sydney to match a bid for highly touted Academy prospect Nick Blakey who has nominated the Swans as his club of choice. 

The combined value of picks No.26 and 28 in the AFL Draft Point Index equates to a traditional pick 10. 

McGovern, 23, requested a trade to Ikon Park last month, despite extending his contract at Adelaide through to the end of 2020 in August last year.

He played a total of 48 games for the Crows, kicking 67 goals.

McAdam, a highly rated 181cm forward from Sturt, kicked 31 goals from 17 games in the SANFL this year and also attracted interest from Gold Coast as a mature-aged recruit.

The Blues had been able to pre-list two state-league players as part of an AFL compensation package that was granted to both them and the Suns last month.

They had already signed South Australian forward Nathan Kreuger as their first state-league recruit, before on-trading him to Geelong in exchange for pick No.43 on Monday.

 

Fasolo is also expected to be confirmed as Carlton player at some stage on Wednesday after the final details regarding a three-year free agency deal were finalised earlier in the week.

The 26-year-old played 101 games across eight years for the Magpies, kicking 133 goals, but only managed one game throughout a lean 2018 campaign.
