FREMANTLE young gun Andrew Brayshaw plans to seek out West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff to shake hands if they both start on the ground in Sunday's JLT Community Series clash. 

The Mandurah match will be the first time the pair have crossed paths on a football field since Gaff's shocking hit broke Brayshaw's jaw and displaced five teeth in last year's round 20 Western Derby. 

Brayshaw and Gaff have met multiple times since the jarring incident, including to play golf over the off-season and at Hamish Brayshaw's recent 21st birthday party. 

But there will be heightened interest in their first on-field meeting, and Brayshaw intends to go out of his way to shake Gaff's hand in a public show of reconciliation.

"If I start on (the ground) I'd probably like to, and I'm sure he'd probably want to do something similar," Brayshaw said. 

"But if I'm starting off or he's starting off it might not happen. 

"We'll definitely get in touch post-game and wish each other luck for the rest of the year I think. 

"If I cross paths (during the game) with him I'll just be focused on my sort of footy. 

"If he has the ball, I'm going to do what I'd do if anyone else has the ball, and I think he would do the same."

Brayshaw saw Monday's opening JLT Community Series clash against Collingwood as the final hurdle in his psychological recovery from Gaff's blow. 

The 19-year-old was arguably Freo's best in the 27-point loss, amassing 25 touches and winning four clearances. 

"Even just the first few contests, going up against guys who aren't your teammate (boosted my confidence)," Brayshaw said. 

"Everything is checked off now and I felt really good and really confident out there. 

"I couldn't have been happier with the way I went about it and just looking forward to this weekend."

West Coast star Gaff, who was sidelined from the run to last year's premiership, performed solidly in his return last Friday, picking up 27 disposals in the win over Geelong. 

Gaff still has two games of his eight-match ban to serve during the regular season. 

Brayshaw, who considered wearing two NFL-style mouth guards this season to protect his bottom teeth, still needs root canals but said his jaw has fully recovered. 

The hard-working onballer is keen to move on from the incident and didn't expect his teammates to target Gaff or take any extra motivation into Sunday's game. 

"Whenever we play West Coast it's a pretty big deal, but my teammates are all pretty professional and I think they're just going to be wanting to improve off last week and play the brand of footy we want to play," he said. 

"It will definitely be strong, competitive, but I wouldn't expect them to play any differently really."

Freo hopes to regain superstar skipper Nat Fyfe (elbow), recruit Reece Conca (knee) and ruckman Sean Darcy (hamstring) in the final round one warm-up. 

Brayshaw said the Dockers are aiming to improve their ball use after having 60 inside 50s but scoring only 12 goals with a new-look attack against the Pies. 

"We got it in there a few times and really are just trying to let our forwards go to work," he said. 

"We might have been overcompensating a little bit for the tall talent down there but we'll adjust and have just got to keep working on that connection piece."
