ESSENDON great Matthew Lloyd says Richmond's boom recruit Tom Lynch is a "massive concern", labelling the spearhead a "liability" and suggesting he is a one-trick pony at present.

Lynch, the former Gold Coast co-captain, made an impressive start at Tigerland with 16 goals in the opening four rounds, but has tallied just 1.4 in his past three outings.

He sits second in the Coleman Medal race behind Greater Western Sydney star Jeremy Cameron, but Lloyd has fears about the mobility of the 26-year-old, who was sidelined for the bulk of last season and much of the pre-season with a posterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee.

Lloyd, the great Bombers full-forward, said the 199cm Lynch struggled once the ball hit the ground and wasn't applying enough defensive pressure.

In Richmond's 47-point loss to the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, Lynch was blanketed by spare-parts big man Jackson Trengove, managing just five possessions and scoring just one behind.

Asked whether he would have backed Trengove to have won the duel, Lloyd said: "The way Lynch is playing and moving, I would say yes."

"He's a massive concern," Lloyd said on Melbourne radio station 3AW on Monday night.

"He's turning like I maybe would at the moment, as a 41-year-old.

"That's a really big sledge, but unless he can mark or get it lace out, he's a liability at the moment, Tom Lynch – at ground level, defensively, turning.

"Compare him (to) Cameron (who is) the benchmark. Pretty much unless he marks it he's not effective as a player."
