CARLTON defender Liam Jones will miss the final two games of the 2019 season, having suffered a nasty throat injury during Sunday's brutal loss to Richmond.

Jones sustained a non-displaced fracture of the larynx in his throat, with the Blues opting to rule the in-form defender out for the rest of the season as a result of the injury.

He spent Sunday night in hospital, but will not require surgery to fix the problem.

"It is disappointing for Jonesy that he won’t be able to finish off what has been an outstanding individual season for him," Carlton footy boss Brad Lloyd said.

"Jonesy and our backline group have formed a really strong bond throughout the year – one that will continue to grow with another full pre-season.

"We wish Jonesy a speedy recovery and look forward to having him back and fully fit for day one of pre-season training."

Jones enjoyed a solid 2019 campaign, which was unfortunately plagued by injury. He had already missed seven weeks of footy earlier in the year due to a heavy concussion.

The 28-year-old recently signed a three-year contract extension with the Blues, ensuring his future at the club until at least the end of the 2022 season.
