IT’S CARNAGE out there. If you’re an AFL star with Fantasy points potential, you’d be far safer right now booking a sky-diving course with the No Parachutes Adventure Company.

This week, young guns Ollie Wines [MID, $550,000] and Marcus Bontempelli [FWD/MID $447,000] joined the casualty list and even Geelong’s most bankable Fantasy lock, Jimmy Bartel [FWD, $511,000], won’t be seen for at least two months after suffering a torn medial ligament.
Still, every cloud has a silver lining. Spots are opening up all over the place for cheap cash cows and those who were on the radar in week one - think Kamdyn McIntosh [DEF, $272,000], Cam Ellis-Yolmen [MID, $232,000], Adam Saad [DEF/MID, $219,000], Patrick Cripps [MID, $205,000] and Adam Oxley [DEF, $228,000] - have cemented their spots after three games and are raking in the dollars for savvy coaches.
Don’t be too shy of the Saints if you’re looking for upgrade targets or even a cheap first-year player to free up some cash. David Armitage [MID, $537,000] and Jack Steven [MID, $528,000] have both started the season like a train, and their break-even scores this weekend are in the mid-50s. Jack Sinclair [MID, $177,000] has a break-even of -8 this week, so if he’s named to make the trip to New Zealand, snap him up.
Luke Hodge’s [DEF/MID $597,000] dual-position status makes him round four’s must-have player. He is averaging 33 points more than the next best defender, Richmond’s Taylor Hunt [DEF, $408,000]. Hodge’s break-even is just 59 this week – a repeat of his lowest score of 2014 against the Power (66) would still see his value increase.
If your surname is Goodes, your Fantasy days look numbered – Adam [FWD, $310,000] is unlikely to break back into a winning side against Fremantle, and Brett [DEF, $205,000] has been named the sub in consecutive weeks. Goodes jnr was Fantasy’s sixth most selected player after round three. After 43 points in two weeks, the Bulldog defender will be traded out quicker than shares in a dodgy iron ore company.
Sorry, who broke the ton this week?
Adam Schneider [FWD, $447,000] – 121 points v Collingwood: The Schneider-man turned back the clock on Friday night, specifically to round 21, 2011 where he also scored 121 against, you guessed it, Collingwood.
Taylor Duryea [DEF, $366,000] – 109 points v Western Bulldogs: The premiership defender was dropped for the round two clash with Essendon but received a last0minute reprieve due to an injury to Josh Gibson. A career-high 28 touches against the Bulldogs on Sunday (his previous best was 21) means he’ll be tough to shift from the Hawks’ backline.
You! My team. Now!
Stephen Hill [MID, $502,000] – avg 108.7: Brad Hill had been swiftly closing the gap in the AFL’s 'best Hill’ stakes, but Stephen has put his little brother back in line with an opening three-week average of 108.7. A magnificent 149 in the Western Derby left the Eagles’ (including third-place getter Josh Hill) flat-footed.
Jack Martin [FWD, $349,000] – avg 87.3: Isaac Heeney is all the rage, but don’t forget about this shining Sun. Martin was magnificent against the Cats at a wet and windy Skilled Stadium and he represents outstanding value for money as a cheap forward.
I’m not angry, just disappointed
Jarrad Waite [FWD, $451,000] - 42 points v Port Adelaide: A rough dose of Jack Hombsch had Waite looking more like his old Carlton self. His substantial price tag means 42-point games can’t be tolerated when you can get Gold Coast’s Tom Lynch for $30,000 less.
Scott Lycett [FWD/RUC, $390,000] – 44 points v Fremantle: Lycett was a popular Fantasy pick before round one, as fans looked for a lock-in tall at West Coast to cover Dean Cox’s retirement. He wasn’t the only Eagle to struggle against a rampant Freo on the weekend. Hold fire for a week – Lycett’s only previous appearance at the Gabba (against this week’s opponents, the Lions) yielded 98 points.
