Hansen is four weeks away from playing, according to an updated injury list North released on Tuesday.
This recovery timeframe would see him miss all three of the Roos' NAB Challenge games against Adelaide at Port Lincoln on Sunday, Hawthorn in Shepparton on March 8 and Richmond at Etihad Stadium on March 21.
AFL.com.au understands Hansen still harbours hope of playing the final game against Richmond, but the 26-year-old has yet to return to full training after having surgery on both hips at the end of last season.
North will be sweating on the 197cm backman's availability for round one given fellow key defender Nathan Grima has been ruled out with a back injury and the Crows' attack will likely centre around talls Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins and James Podsiadly.
But Hansen still faces a race against time to take his place in the April 5 clash at the Adelaide Oval, with his backline colleague Michael Firrito telling AFL.com.au last week he did not expect him to play.
Hansen battled hip soreness in the second half of last season and missed six of North's final seven games, including all three finals.
The former No.3 draft pick has become a vital member of North's defence in recent seasons, establishing himself as one of the best intercept marks in the competition.
