MELBOURNE forward Jeff Garlett's licence was suspended and he was fined $450 at an informal hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to drink-driving and driving while suspended.
Police alleged Garlett registered more than double the legal blood alcohol limit when he was pulled over in Brunswick on July 14 last year.
Garlett's lawyer said the footballer was very remorseful.
His actions were the result of a relationship break-up, as well as the insecurity Garlett felt while his football contract with Carlton was up in the air.
Garlett had since taken steps to take control of his life, reunited with his partner, and built a strong friendship with Aboriginal elder Uncle Boots, his lawyer said.
"I'm sorry for what I've done," Garlett told the court in hushed tones.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Dan Muling warned Garlett he could face jail time if he drove while his licence was suspended.
"People like you can make a difference," Muling said.
Garlett was traded to Melbourne late last year after falling out with the Blues.
