SEVERAL clubs have been forced to alter their training plans on Wednesday as the bushfire smoke haze continues to blanket Melbourne.

The Environmental Protection Authority Victoria has warned that Melbourne's air quality could reach 'hazardous' levels for the second straight day

The Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood all had open training sessions scheduled on Wednesday but they have had to change their plans.

Hawthorn has also cancelled Wednesday’s outdoor session and has rescheduled the rest of the week’s training load to offset the disruption.

After completing a planned indoor session on Tuesday, Collingwood has moved Wednesday's session from outdoors at the Holden Centre to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The Bulldogs moved their session inside at the Whitten Oval, while the Demons have postponed their planned morning session and will monitor the conditions before deciding whether the team will step out on Gosch's Paddock later on in the afternoon.

The Blues have also changed their plans due to concerns over the continued smoke haze, having last trained outdoors on Monday.

"Training today has been significantly modified as required as a result of the air quality and we'll continue to monitor the EPA so as not to compromise players' and staff safety," a Carlton spokesperson said. 

The AFL had already briefed club doctors ahead of the deterioration in air quality on Tuesday. 

Clubs received contact from the League's medical team in recent days advising them to monitor the Air Quality Index, as well as smoke pollution and exercise guidelines, as the fallout from the national bushfire crisis continues take its toll.

North Melbourne moved its scheduled skills session indoors on Tuesday as a result, while Richmond opted to keep its 30-minute training outdoors following assessment of the haze.

By early Tuesday morning Environment Protection Authority Victoria had listed the air quality in Melbourne as hazardous before it was downgraded to 'very poor'.

Essendon, Geelong, St Kilda, Collingwood, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Carlton and Hawthorn continued with planned training indoors after main training sessions on Monday.

Sydney – which has had air pollution in recent weeks – received a 'good' air rating on Tuesday as the Swans and Giants continued pre-season.
