RICHMOND has temporarily suspended its VFL program and won't train or play any practice matches because of the coronavirus crisis. 

The Tigers' VFL operations manager, Anthony Fagan, informed their VFL playing group of the decision.

Richmond's call also places in jeopardy the start of the VFL season, which was due to begin on April 3, with a match between Collingwood's reserves and Hawthorn's state league affiliate Box Hill. 

AFL.com.au revealed on Saturday that Victorian-based AFL clubs were considering putting on hold their involvement in the VFL.

The logic is AFL-listed players involved in any capacity in the VFL program are exposed to people outside their own highly monitored and medically focused work environments. 

Richmond, like all AFL clubs, is in the process of implementing significant changes to its program to decrease the likelihood of players contracting COVID-19. 

AFL.com.au is aware a series of clubs earlier in the week started advising players feeling unwell at all to stay away from training. 

Richmond and AFL Victoria were contacted for comment.

CORONAVIRUS CRISIS AFL makes call on round one

The AFL still plans to complete its round one fixture at this stage, albeit at largely empty stadiums, as per the Federal Government's ban on "non-essential" mass gatherings. 

Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale issued a statement of support on Friday for the ban, "to protect the health and safety of the community".

"We understand the serious nature of COVID-19," Gale said.

"We will continue to comply with the latest advice from the government and health authorities to protect our own players and staff, as well as our club members and supporters, and the broader community.

"We know that our fans will be disappointed to be unable to attend our upcoming AFL and AFLW games – we love to play in front of the Tiger Army, and we know they're eager to attend our games.

"While access to the club and our games is not possible right now, the club will continue to engage its members and supporters during this time, to keep them informed and connected to the club."

Richmond has also indefinitely delayed the unfurling of its 2019 premiership flag until its fans can again be present at games.
