THE BRISBANE Lions have thrown their support behind the recently mooted mid-season trade period but club CEO Greg Swann wants clarity on how it would affect the salary cap.
AFL boss Gillon McLachlan told Fox Footy on Thursday the concept could be introduced as early as next season.
"Certainly, from our point of view, I think it's got some merit," Swann told Melbourne radio station SEN on Friday morning.
But the former Carlton chief said complexities around the salary cap could be an issue.
"You've got to do your pre-season estimates. That's probably the tricky bit about swapping picks for players," he said.
"The salary cap's the bit that's a bit tricky, and I don't think it's been explained just yet how that would work."
Swann believes mid-season trading would not have a psychological impact on players and players would not have to worry about being traded against their will.
"With all those things, nothing happens unless the player wants it. No one's going to shift you out if you don't want to go," he said.
“Personally, I don't think it'll be massive. There might only be three or four (trades mid-year). It probably adds a bit of interest in the middle of the season for a long year."
