GREATER Western Sydney big man Rory Lobb has escaped a major injury to his ankle and could be fit to face Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium this week.
Lobb, who landed awkwardly in a marking contest late in the third quarter of the Giants' 88-point win over Richmond on Saturday, clutched his left leg straight away and took no further part in the match.
Scans have cleared the tall forward of any structural damage to the ankle, but they did reveal a grade one strain to his medial collateral ligament (MCL) on the same leg.
The 23-year-old leads GWS for contested marks after playing every game in 2016, and has provided solid back-up in the ruck for star Shane Mumford.
GWS head of athletic performance David Joyce said Lobb would be tested later in the week to see if he can make the trip to take on the Suns.
"We'll monitor Rory closely over the next 48 hours but are not expecting an extended lay off," he said.
"The injury is at the minor end of the scale, but we'll take a cautious approach as we look to get Rory back on the field."
Fellow young ruckman Tom Downie looms as Lobb's logical replacement if he's passed fit to play, after missing the game before the Giants' NEAFL bye last week with a shoulder problem.
If Downie doesn't get up, it opens the door for off-season recruit Dawson Simpson, who has worked his way into form over the past month.
Midfielders Jack Steele (hand) and Jacob Hopper (back) are a chance to play this weekend, as is forgotten key defender Aidan Corr (ankle).
While Steele was ruled out of the round 19 win over the Tigers and Hopper has missed the past five games, Corr hasn't played since round three and is running out of time to get some footy under his belt before the finals.
Steele will be in the frame for senior selection, while Hopper and Corr will return in the NEAFL if they're cleared to take the field this weekend.
