Hawthorn star forward, Mark Williams, will miss the remainder of the 2007 season, after a recent set back in his recovery from knee surgery.

Williams had been making good progress following surgery almost four months ago. However, with an enforced rest of at least two weeks, the 24-year-old will not be able complete the desired month of training before proving his match fitness through the VFL, and then be available for a potential return to the seniors.

The signs of recovery had initially been good, according to Hawthorn’s General Manager of Football, Mark Evans, but unfortunately in the end, time just run out for the Hawks forward.

“Last week Mark trained really well and showed some really positives signs with the running session he did and some low level ball work.

“We were quiet optimistic that he might be able to progress into skills training within a week or two. Unfortunately, off the back of that session his knee swelled up a little and we gave it few days to clam down – but it took a little longer than expected.

“So now the medical staff have advised that he needs two weeks of doing nothing to be safe and by the time we progress him to that point again (were he can join in skills training), he won’t get back in time for this season.”

Hawthorn’s leading goal kicker of the previous two seasons will now focus on 2008. After some rest – it will be all about preparing Williams for the pre-season, and a NAB Cup return.
