While the League CEO supports Cricket Victoria's proposed academy at St Kilda's Junction Oval, he denied the AFL would contribute money to the high performance centre.
A News Limited report this week suggested the AFL and Melbourne Cricket Club had agreed to pay up to $6 million to the project to secure access to the MCG at least one week earlier in March next year.
When asked if the AFL would support cricket financially as part of the deal, Demetriou told ABC Radio: "No, I reckon we've been doing a pretty good job at the MCG. We've been supporting them in other ways."
He said it was "simply not true" that there has been a breakthrough with Cricket Victoria.
"The fact of the matter is we're not accessing, or trying to access, the MCG earlier next year because it's required for cricket," Demetriou said.
"Even in the event that the Junction Oval cricket academy was approved, it would be being built, and the access to the MCG at the earliest would be 2016.
"So I have no idea why that story was written.
"I had a phone call from my chairman saying, 'Is there something new I don't know about?'
"It's just a nonsense story."
