IT'S NOT quite Shane Warne taking cans of baked beans on a cricket tour of India, but Port Adelaide has ensured some of the food comforts of home have travelled with the team to Shanghai.
The Power have brought some of their own food with them among 600kg of freight in preparation for Saturday's clash with Gold Coast, mostly muesli bars and protein supplement.
They have also organised for the team's hotel to import Australian produce, especially meat, to serve to the players and staff.
"It is a little bit more difficult than a standard away game," club nutritionist Emily Hartley told the Power website.
"We’re really lucky that we have worked closely with the chefs, so we organised a menu a couple of months before we arrived which means they had enough time to import a lot of the produce from Australia, particularly the meats."
"There’s just a higher risk for the meats in China so we are lucky we were able to get them from Australia to limit that risk."
Hartley said the hotel buffet offered a variety of salads, meats and vegetables, but among the most popular dishes were dumplings.
"We’ve got a variety of different things so there is something for everyone," she said.
"We’ve got a bit of a salad bar, rolls, meats, plus traditional foods like dumplings.
"We’re really lucky because there’s such a wide variety of foods, so it means the players are getting the best nutrition possible, they’re coming into training fuelled, and it means they’ll be in the best shape possible for the game on Saturday."
On Thursday The Advertiser reported the 600kg of freight includes:
68kg of match jumpers, training jumpers and shorts
69kg of football boots
37kg of footballs
30kg of protein, caffeine and beetroot
30kg of cherry juice and muesli bars
22kg of bandages, tape and medical supplies
18kg of towels
15kg of ruck bags
