ADELAIDE vice-captain Rory Sloane has been ruled out of Thursday night's qualifying final against Greater Western Sydney at Adelaide Oval, with the risk of suffering internal damage too great.

The 27-year-old had his appendix removed last Tuesday and had only returned to light running after the surgery.

Sloane told Adelaide radio station Triple M on Wednesday he hadn't done enough work to line up against the Giants.

"I had a good chat with doctors this morning (and) I had a good chat with the surgeon just before. It came down to whether I'd done the work throughout the week. It's been 10 days since I last played and ran around and that kind of thing," Sloane said.

"Just the risk versus reward as well. As I said, I would've loved to have been out there, but just the risk of doing some damage internally is probably a bit high."

Crows head of football Brett Burton told afc.com.au Sloane hadn’t done enough to be able to justify selection.

"Naturally players want to play so we gave Sloaney every opportunity to get up, including training this morning," Burton said.

"Ultimately it’s a medical decision and the advice was that it was too short a turnaround between the surgery and tomorrow night’s game."

The Crows expect Sloane will be fit for the club's second final, either a semi-final next week or a preliminary final if they beat the Giants.

Sloane's teammate Eddie Betts suffered the same injury in July, and that experience meant the dual best and fairest had an idea about what he was suffering.

"I got the pain last Tuesday night. After Eddie's bout of appendicitis, I sort of knew what the symptoms were and as it started happening, I went 'Oh no, I really hope this is just gastro', but I sort of knew what was going on," Sloane said.
