FORMER Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna is headed back to Melbourne.

Although he has no work lined up at the moment, AFL.com.au understands McKenna will make the move south in the next two months.

It is believed he is open to a return to coaching or a possible move into the media.

McKenna was sacked after his four-year tenure as Suns coach last month following a football department review of the 2014 season.

He had 12 months remaining on his contract.

McKenna took the Suns to the brink of the finals before losing six of their last seven matches to finish 12th with a 10-12 win-loss record.

Moving to Melbourne is nothing new for the two-time West Coast premiership player.

He was an assistant coach to Mick Malthouse at Collingwood from 2004-2008, before heading to Gold Coast to become its inaugural coach in the TAC Cup in 2009.
