ADELAIDE could dominate the 2017 Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team, with eight players named in the 40-man squad on Monday.

The minor premiers are represented by captain Taylor Walker, superstar forward Eddie Betts, midfielders Matt Crouch and Rory Sloane, ruckman Sam Jacobs, defenders Rory Laird and Jake Lever, and forward Tom Lynch. 

A massive 26 players are jockeying for their first ever selection in the All Australian team, which will be finalised on Wednesday, while 12 players from last year's team have been nominated for back-to-back selections.

Notable omissions include Richmond captain Trent Cotchin, Sydney midfielder Luke Parker, Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy, Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver and Geelong half-back Zach Tuohy.

Walker is one of three club captains named in the squad, alongside Geelong skipper Joel Selwood and Sydney leader Josh Kennedy.

Coleman medallist Lance Franklin is in line for his seventh All Australian selection, with star goalkickers Josh Kennedy (West Coast), Ben Brown (North Melbourne) and Joe Daniher (Essendon) also selected. 

The selectors have named three ruckmen, with Jacobs joined by Port Adelaide's Paddy Ryder and Carlton's Matthew Kreuzer. All three are pushing for their first selections, while Jacobs has been nominated in the squad twice (2012, 2014).

There are 14 midfielders in the squad, including Greater Western Sydney trio Josh Kelly, Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel, who are all pushing for their first selections.

Hawthorn accumulator Tom Mitchell has also earned his first nomination after a brilliant season that saw him break the record for overall possessions (787) and the most games with 30 or more possessions in a season (20).

Superstars Patrick Dangerfield and Dustin Martin were natural inclusions, while Dayne Zorko (Brisbane Lions), Adam Treloar (Collingwood), Zach Merrett (Essendon), Seb Ross (St Kilda) and Marcus Bontempelli (Western Bulldogs) were given the nod.

The selectors have gone with three key defenders in Alex Rance (Richmond), Michael Hurley (Essendon) and Jeremy McGovern (West Coast), as well as versatile Port Adelaide backman Tom Jonas.  

There is a lot of competition for half-back and small defender spots, with six in contention for their first All Australian selections – Sam Docherty (Carlton), Jeremy Howe (Collingwood), Michael Hibberd (Melbourne), Neville Jetta (Melbourne), Dylan Roberton (St Kilda) and Elliot Yeo (West Coast).

Three small forwards have been named, with Robbie Gray (Port Adelaide) jockeying for his third selection in four years and Toby Greene (GWS) in contention for back-to-back selections. Melbourne's Jeff Garlett has been nominated in the squad for the first time.

The final team of 22 will be named on Wednesday and selected to "best fit team balance as if to play a match".
