The 22-year-old, who won't play again until next season, is hoping to be jogging within the next two months.
"It's 11 weeks tomorrow since the surgery," he said during an appearance at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
"And I lost the boot yesterday, which was a huge relief.
"The first (thing you get rid of) is the crutches, then you get some feeling back in the arms after a while.
"Then to lose the boot as well, you feel like a new man.
"All the little things you take for granted that are taken away from you, but now you get them back.
"It's a huge relief."
Trengove will complete the next part of his rehabilitation overseas.
He is off to Spain on Sunday to enjoy some time in the sun.
After that he will head to the Scottish city of Glasgow to see his sister Jess compete in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games.
"For the next month or so, I'll just be getting used to walking around without a boot, having full weight on it, and adding a few things in my gym exercises to build up the strength in the leg," he said.
"I'm probably looking to start a bit of jogging and stuff in mid-August.
"In saying that, I've got time on my side, so there's no real rush. We'll wait and see week-to-week how it is.
"I'm not trying to get back for any games this year. It's just about trying to get myself right and fully healthy for the start of next season.
"So there's plenty of time."
