No.8 in the AFL Players' Top 50, brought to you by Bailey, was the focus of off-season headlines when he joined the Sydney Swans in the most lucrative deal in the game's history.

8. Lance Franklin
Sydney Swans
Forward
Official AFL Player Rating: 11
Debut: 2005
Games: 183

Following nine seasons, 182 games and two flags with Hawthorn, Franklin headed north to play the remaining years of his AFL career as a Swan. Turning 27 on January 30, Franklin will be under the spotlight as he attempts to keep the Swans among the competition’s best teams.

Armed with a nine-year contract, he has plenty of time to prove his undoubted worth. Joining a forward line that boasts Kurt Tippett, Adam Goodes, Sam Reid and former Hawthorn teammate Ben McGlynn, Franklin’s size and speed means he may continue to spend time further up the ground.

Below: Franklin is yet to hit his stride in year one of his record-breaking nine-year contract with the Swans

Strengths
Is a tremendous athlete and moves like a gazelle. Excellent when the ball hits and the ground and there's a contest to be won. He can terrorise opponents with his presence.

Weaknesses
For a player pushing towards 600 goals (and with two Coleman Medals in his pocket) he still misses too many easy goals. The key forward also struggles overhead.

What the players said
"You're never certain what he's going to do, which makes him hard to plan for … His confidence stands out for me – always thinking that he can get the ball or kick the goal and change the course of the game ... A once in a generation type player that people are very lucky to witness." - Harry Taylor

"I'm not sure we'll see another player like him in the near future." - Nick Riewoldt

"Superstar of the game, with still untapped potential." - Nathan Brown
