The Suns were scheduled to fly to Wyoming in the first week of December but the club has cancelled the trip, with a preference for an intense pre-Christmas training block.

 

It is expected the new coach will be in place by early November, but the coaching appointment will not be rushed.

 

AFL.com.au believes Leigh Tudor, Brendon Bolton and Brett Ratten are among the leading candidates to fill the vacant chair.

 

Suns football manager Marcus Ashcroft confirmed the trip had been called off.

 

"We're not going, with a new coach in the job it's basically three weeks we think can be better spent," Ashcroft told the Courier Mail.

 

Sacked coach Guy McKenna was a big advocate of the benefits of altitude training and the trips had the support of senior Gold Coast players.

 

Ashcroft said he was unsure whether the club would explore more altitude camps in the future.

 

"It's hard to say, we don’t know yet what the new coach thinks about it," Ashcroft said.

 

"But if you look around the industry, it's losing popularity, a lot of clubs are starting to look at heat training."
