JONATHAN Giles is headed to Essendon, paving the way for Patrick Ryder to make his way to Port Adelaide.

Giles, 26, was traded to the Bombers in the final hours of the NAB AFL Trade Period along with NAB AFL Draft selection No.62.

In exchange, Greater Western Sydney receives the Bombers' third round selection of No.53.

South Australian Giles picked Essendon as his preferred club this week over Adelaide.

It is expected the Bombers will also deal for Western Bulldogs' veteran Adam Cooney before the 2pm deadline, as part of a trade that will see Ryder head to the Power.

Giles has played 51 games since his debut in 2012 but was starved for opportunities this season after the arrival of Shane Mumford at the Giants.

He will back up Essendon big man Tom Bellchambers, who endured ankle problems this year, following Ryder's expected departure.
