THE AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the first five matches played so far in Round Eight. The following charges were laid:

Jarryd Roughead, Hawthorn, has been charged with a Level One engaging in rough conduct offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Ben McGlynn, Sydney Swans, during the third quarter of the round eight match between Hawthorn and the Sydney Swans, played at the SCG on Friday May 9, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his carry-over demerit points from a previous offence, his one-match sanction must remain at one-match, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Sydney Swans Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 218.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 164.06 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

 

Paul Duffield, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level One engaging in rough conduct offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Chad Wingard, Port Adelaide, during the second quarter of the round eight match between Fremantle and Port Adelaide, played at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday May 10, 2014.

 

In summary, due to a six-year good record, his one-match sanction can be reduced to a reprimand and 70.31 demerit points towards his future record with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing six-year good record, reducing the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 towards towards his future record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 70.31 demerit points towards his future record.

 

Matt Maguire, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a Level One tripping offence (80 demerit points, reprimand) for tripping Joe Daniher, Essendon, during the third quarter of the round eight match between the Brisbane Lions and Essendon, played at the Gabba on Saturday May 10, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his carry-over demerit points from a previous offence, his reprimand is increased to a one-match sanction, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has an existing bad record of 93.75 demerit points within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 173.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 130.31 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

 

Paul Chapman, Essendon, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for striking Dayne Zorko, Brisbane Lions, during the fourth quarter of the round eight match between Essendon and the Brisbane Lions, played at the Gabba on Saturday May 10, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his carry-over demerit points from a previous offence, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Brisbane Lions Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). He has an existing bad record of 68.75 demerit points within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 193.75 points and a one-match sanction. Liam Jones, Western Bulldogs, has been charged with a Level Three engaging in rough conduct Offence (325 demerit points, three-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Melbourne’s Dean Terlich during the third quarter of the Round Eight match between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, played at the MCG on Saturday May 10, 2014.

 

In summary, he can accept a two-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Melbourne Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three Offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 243.75 demerit points and a two-match sanction.

 

Mark LeCras, West Coast, has been charged with a Level Two engaging in rough conduct offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Will Hoskin-Elliott, GWS Giants, during the first quarter of the Round Eight match between West Coast and the GWS Giants, played at Patersons Stadium on Sunday May 11, 2014.

 

In summary, due to a six-year good record, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the GWS Giants Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and a two-match sanction. He has an existing six-year good record, reducing the penalty by 25 per cent 168.75 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 126.56 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

 

 

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Luke Parker and Hawthorn’s Mitch Hallahan from the third quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The ball was thrown up in the centre of the ground and was loose. Parker and Hallahan approached the ball from opposite directions and contact was made between the pair. It was the view of the panel that Parker was contesting the ball and did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Andrew Raines and Essendon’s Brendon Goddard from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball was loose and Goddard was moving towards the contest. Goddard attempted to hit the ball forward to a team mate while Raines moved in from the side seeking to pick up the ball. Contact was made between the pair and it was the view of the panel that Raines was contesting the ball and did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between Essendon’s Paul Chapman and the Brisbane Lions’ Jack Redden from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence, with a free kick paid at the time for the high contact. No further action was taken.

 

Contact between the GWS Giants’ Josh Hunt and West Coast’s Jamie Cripps from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The ball was loose and Hunt was running to the contest when Cripps approached from an adjacent direction. Hunt did not deviate off his line and kicked the ball towards the direction of a teammate, when contact was made. It was the view of the panel that Hunt was contesting the ball and did not have a realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.
