FORMER Sydney Swan Craig Bolton has been appointed general manager of AFL NSW/ACT, replacing fellow premiership winner Tom Harley in the role.

Bolton, who was part of the Swans' breakthrough flag in 2005, became AFL NSW/ACT's deputy general manager back in March 2013 and has now taken the step up to the top job.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou has praised the contribution of the former defender, saying he has proven himself to be the ideal person to take on the role.

"Since finishing his playing career, Craig has quickly established himself as an outstanding leader with the capacity to take the game forward across all levels," Demetriou said.

“This is clearly a vitally important role for the AFL and, as a local Canberra product whose career spanned both Brisbane and Sydney Football Clubs, Craig has a deep understanding of the game’s development in growth markets.

“We’re delighted to have someone of Craig’s character and capability in the role.”

Bolton started his playing career with the Brisbane Lions, making 29 appearances over three seasons before joining the Swans in 2003.

In eight seasons with the Swans, Bolton played 170 games and earned All Australian honours in 2006 and 2009.

An International Rules representative in 2004, Bolton co-captained the Swans alongside Brett Kirk and Leo Barry from 2008 until his retirement in 2010.

Since joining AFL NSW/ACT, his responsibilities have included community participation and priority markets, and he is looking forward to the step up.

"Under the exceptional leadership of Tom Harley, AFL in NSW/ACT has grown significantly both as a team and in terms of working to achieve outstanding growth in participation numbers,” Bolton said.

“We have a great platform for future growth and I look forward to watching the game flourishfrom the grassroots level right through to the two AFL clubs here in New South Wales."
