The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed the matches played in week two of the 2014 Toyota AFL Finals Series. The following charges were laid:

 

Brent Harvey, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level One Engaging in Rough Conduct Offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Joel Selwood, Geelong Cats, during the second quarter of the Second Semi Final match between North Melbourne Melbourne and the Geelong Cats, played at the MCG on Friday September 12, 2014.

 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.

 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Geelong Cats Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of three matches suspended within the last two years, increasing the penalty by 10 per cent to 137.50 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He also has 41 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 178.50 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 133.88 points and a one-match sanction.

 

The match day report for Fremantle’s Zac Dawson for striking Port Adelaide’s Robbie Gray from Saturday night’s match was assessed. After viewing all available footage and speaking to the umpire who laid the report, the panel said: The ball was kicked into the Port Adelaide forward line directed to Robbie Gray. As Gray was preparing to mark, Dawson was coming in to the contest and seeking to spoil the ball. Dawson left the ground with the intent to spoil, before the ball arrives with Gray. As Gray completed the mark, Dawson continued with his spoiling motion and made high contact to the Port Adelaide player with his upper arm. It was the view of the panel that Dawson’s action was a legitimate spoiling action and not a striking motion. No further action was taken.
