Star midfielder Greene likely to extend stay at Giants
GWS midfielder in advanced contract talks to extend stay at the club
TOBY Greene looks set to recommit to Greater Western Sydney, with the midfielder in advanced talks to extend his stay at the Giants.
Greene, 21, is set to come out of contract at the end of next season, but AFL.com.au understands the Giants are keen to retain him and that the Victorian is equally happy at the club.
The former Oakleigh Charger bounced back well from a club-imposed five-match suspension in May this year, returning to play the Giants' final eight matches when he averaged more than 30 possessions a game.
Greene's suspension arose from an incident at a Victorian pub, from which the midfielder still faces several police charges including one count of recklessly causing serious injury.
GWS has a host of other young stars set to come out of contract at the end of 2015, including Jeremy Cameron, Dylan Shiel, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio, Devon Smith and Will Hoskin-Elliott.
All will attract keen interest from rival clubs as long as they remain uncontracted beyond next season.
However, the Giants have been busy since the end of the 2014 season, re-signing Jonathon Patton, Adam Tomlinson, Nick Haynes, Adam Kennedy, Andrew Phillips and Rory Lobb, all to the end of 2017.
Greene burst onto the AFL scene in his debut season, 2012, finishing runner-up in the Giants' best and fairest award after averaging more than 28 possessions a game.
He found the going tougher in 2013, when he started the season in unfamiliar run-with roles and spent a brief stint in the NEAFL in the middle of the year.
The midfielder bounced back this season to finish sixth in the Giants' best and fairest despite his five-game suspension.
