FORMER Sydney Swan Ryan O'Keefe overlooked genuine opportunities to play on next season, instead choosing to begin his coaching career at Adelaide.

The 33-year-old retired in September after a glittering 286-game career that included two premierships and a Norm Smith Medal.

But in his final season he only managed four senior games for the Swans as he fell out of favour after being dropped in round four.
In joining the Crows, O'Keefe said he rejected several clubs who were keen for him to play into a 16th AFL season.
He takes up a role as a development coach at Adelaide and will work closely with the club's young midfield group.

"That's something (playing on) I had to weigh up but I think the opportunity here was good … I had to sort of think beyond 12 months," he said.

"I could have, the body's fine, I still love playing, but I thought this was a great opportunity [and] I didn't want it to pass.

"I wanted to get into coaching, I had to think long-term and I'm really glad I made the decision."

O'Keefe also knocked back coaching offers from other clubs to join the Crows.

He said the club's values under coach Phil Walsh reflected those he held highest during his playing days

"I was just really impressed with the organisation, the playing group, the club and where it wanted to go," he said.

"It's all about the team, a team-first mentality, elite standards … it sort of rained home with me.

"You've got to set the bar really high, that whole philosophy is super important – it's probably the key point for a good side."
