SCOTT Selwood's season is all but over after West Coast opted to send the 24-year-old midfielder in for ankle surgery.
The Eagles' vice-captain went under the knife Tuesday and is expected to miss 10-12 weeks. There is a slim chance he could be available if West Coast makes the finals.
The Eagles first revealed their vice-captain had been battling an ankle problem last Friday when he was withdrawn from the selected side to face Gold Coast.
Coach Adam Simpson explained on Saturday that Selwood had been carrying the injury since round three and that it was far worse than first feared.
On Monday it was announced that Selwood would need surgery, but the club wanted to explore other avenues to see if it were possible for the midfielder to play again this season.
"He's going to need a clean-up at some stage," Simpson told radio station 6PR on Monday night.
"We’re just trying to figure out when the best time is. We are quite depleted in some areas in our midfield so we're just still assessing that."
However, West Coast announced on Tuesday that after assessing all the options, immediate surgery was the best course of action for the club's 2012 best and fairest.
