Hawthorn

B: Angus Litherland, Josh Gibson, Matt Suckling
HB: Luke Hodge, Ben Stratton, Grant Birchall
C: Bradley Hill, Jordan Lewis, Isaac Smith
HF: Liam Shiels, Jack Gunston, Luke Breust
F: David Hale, Jarryd Roughead, Paul Puopolo
FOLL: Ben McEvoy, Shaun Burgoyne, Sam Mitchell
INT: Brad Sewell, Jonathan Simpkin, Taylor Duryea
SUB: Will Langford

The Hawks will go into round one without five of their premiership team, with Lance Franklin (Sydney Swans), Brent Guerra and Max Bailey (both retired) having left the club, and Brian Lake (three weeks) and Cyril Rioli (one week) suspended. Replacing Lake won't be easy, especially with Ryan Schoenmakers (anterior cruciate ligament) and Matt Spangher in doubt to play, but Angus Litherland appears ready to make his debut in a re-jigged defence. Matt Suckling (ACL) looks set to return across half-back and trade week recruit Ben McEvoy should more than cover the loss of Bailey in the ruck. - Nick Bowen

Melbourne

B: Lynden Dunn, James Frawley, Dean Terlich
HB: Jack Grimes, Tom McDonald, Alex Georgiou
C: Bernie Vince, Nathan Jones, Jack Watts
HF: Jack Viney, Jeremy Howe, Jack Trengove
F: Jay Kennedy-Harris, Jack Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Toumpas
FOLL: Jake Spencer, Daniel Cross, Dom Tyson
INT: Viv Michie, Jordie McKenzie, Matt Jones
SUB: Sam Blease

The loss of Jesse Hogan because of a back injury is disappointing but it is silly to think he was critical to the Demons winning in round one. After all, he has not played an AFL game yet. The absence of Mitch Clark and Chris Dawes makes Jack Fitzpatrick and Jeremy Howe the key talls up forward. Both are in good form and will test the Saints' defence. Max Gawn, Dean Kent and Mark Jamar will not be match fit and Alex Georgiou deserves his chance although Mitch Clisby and James Strauss will be considered. Jay Kennedy-Harris should get his chance although Sam Blease and Rohan Bail could easily win a spot as a small forward. Luke Tapscott had an interrupted pre-season and Christian Salem won't be ready although he is certainly talented. - Peter Ryan

North Melbourne

B: Lachlan Hansen, Scott Thompson, Scott McMahon
HB: Aaron Mullett, Nathan Grima, Nick Dal Santo
C: Ryan Bastinac, Jack Ziebell, Shaun Atley
HF: Brent Harvey, Majak Daw, Aaron Black
F: Lindsay Thomas, Drew Petrie, Robin Nahas
FOLL: Todd Goldstein, Daniel Wells, Ben Cunnington
INT: Jamie Macmillan, Sam Gibson, Luke McDonald

The biggest question facing North Melbourne's selectors ahead of round one will be the structure of their forward line. With Robbie Tarrant (tibia) unavailable, Majak Daw and ruckman Daniel Currie appear to be vying for the third tall spot alongside Drew Petrie and Aaron Black. Although Currie's pre-season form has been stronger, Daw's superior athleticism should give him the nod. Leigh Adams' likely unavailability also opens up a spot for a small forward, with former Tiger Robin Nahas a good chance to debut for the Roos. Of course, North will be without skipper Andrew Swallow (Achilles tendon), but star recruit Nick Dal Santo will help cover his absence in the midfield. - Nick Bowen

Port Adelaide

B: Tom Jonas, Alipate Carlile, Jarman Impey
HB: Cameron O'Shea, Jackson Trengove, Jasper Pittard
C: Kane Cornes, Brad Ebert, Jared Polec
HF: Robbie Gray, Justin Westhoff, Angus Monfries
F: Paul Stewart, Jay Schulz, Chad Wingard
FOLL: Matthew Lobbe, Travis Boak, Hamish Hartlett
INT: Ollie Wines, Andrew Moore, Matt White
SUB: Matthew Broadbent

The Power are building a seriously intimidating midfield unit with the likes of Boak, Hartlett, Ebert and Lobbe joined by Wingard, Wines, Monfries, Gray, Polec and even White. They'll get good drive out of defence through Pittard and O'Shea and the last line of Jonas, Carlile and Impey can handle talls or smalls. Polec and White have settled wonderfully since arriving at Alberton last October and offer outside speed, with Polec in particular showing signs he's set to enjoy a career-best season. Jay Schulz will again be the prime attacking target, but the Power have countless avenues to goal with Stewart, Monfries, Gray and the entire midfield all capable of kicking multiple majors. - Harry Thring

Richmond

B: Steve Morris, Troy Chaplin, Dylan Grimes
HB: Dustin Martin, Alex Rance, Bachar Houli
C: Shaun Grigg, Trent Cotchin, Brandon Ellis
HF: Chris Knights, Jack Riewoldt, Brett Deledio
F: Ben Griffiths, Ty Vickery, Shane Edwards
FOLL: Shaun Hampson, Reece Conca, Dan Jackson
INT: Chris Newman, Nick Vlastuin, Nathan Foley
SUB: Matt Thomas

The absence of No.1 ruckman Ivan Maric (ankle) means recruit Shaun Hampson steps up to play the lead role. The door also opens for Ben Griffiths to come into the team as a tall forward who can offer ruck support. Dylan Grimes is the club's best option as a third tall defender, while Dustin Martin is named at half-back, where he was used effectively through the NAB Challenge. Forward Jake King and defender Ricky Petterd face a battle breaking into a strong line-up. Midfielder Thomas, however, has been impressive through the pre-season and could have done enough to earn a round one call-up. – Nathan Schmook

St Kilda

B: James Gwilt, Luke Delaney, Sean Dempster
HB: Dylan Roberton, Sam Fisher, Jimmy Webster
C: Farren Ray, Clint Jones, Shane Savage
HF: Luke Dunstan, Nick Riewoldt, Rhys Stanley
F: Tom Curren, Beau Maister, Tom Lee
FOLL: Tom Hickey, David Armitage, Jarryn Geary
INT: Adam Schneider, Jack Newnes, Nathan Wright
SUB: Eli Templeton

Lenny Hayes, Leigh Montagna and rookie Maverick Weller are suspended for round one while Jack Steven and Sam Gilbert will miss with foot injuries. Sam Fisher is expected to be available after missing the pre-season games with hamstring soreness, while Tom Simpkin played two NAB Challenge matches and could play if the veteran doesn't. Luke Dunstan has been the pick of the draftees this pre-season and will press for selection while Jack Billings isn't out of the running either with both playing all three games. Melbourne won't have Mitch Clark or Chris Dawes in round one so Josh Bruce might have to wait for his debut while there is potential to elevate exciting midfielder Eli Templeton for Lewis Pierce after his impressive pre-season campaign. - Jennifer Phelan

Sydney Swans

B: Nick Malceski, Heath Grundy, NickSmith
HB:
Rhyce Shaw, Ted Richards, Jarrad McVeigh
C:
Lewis Jetta, Ryan O’Keefe, BenMcGlynn

The notable absence of some key position players makes it aslightly easier task picking the Swans' best line-up. When healthy, KurtTippett and Adam Goodes find their way straight into the forward line, puttingpressure on Roberts-Thomson and Reid, who can both expect to find time indefence this year. Harry Cunningham has had a strong pre-season and will playduring the year, Alex Johnson is close to a return and Jeremy Laidler provides defensive depth. Of the next generation, Dean Towers is pushing for a spot, asare ruck trio Tom Derickx, Toby Nankervis and Sam Naismith. - James Dampney

West Coast

B: Mitch Brown, Darren Glass, Shannon Hurn
HB: Xavier Ellis, Eric Mackenzie, Will Schofield
C: Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Sharrod Wellingham
HF: Mark LeCras, Josh Kennedy, Chris Masten
F: Jamie Cripps, Callum Sinclair, Jack Darling
FOLL: Dean Cox, Scott Selwood, Matt Priddis
INT: Matt Rosa, Elliot Yeo, Nic Naitanui
SUB: Mark Hutchings

Picking the Eagles' round one side is a difficult task as even Adam Simpson is unsure about his best 22, just two weeks out. There are concerns over Nic Naitanui's fitness. He got through the last practice match playing 50 minutes but they will want the insurance of either Callum Sinclair or Scott Lycett if something goes wrong. Sinclair gets the nod simply on impressive form in the NAB Challenge but Lycett could easily play, as he was the incumbent late last year. There are a number who are potential starters but have missed here. Josh Hill, Brad Sheppard, Jamie Bennell and Dom Sheed would all be stiff to miss round one given they've played well in the pre-season. They still could be named depending on how the new coach wants to set up. If Naitanui doesn't need insurance, or indeed isn't risked for round one, Sheed could play as the extra midfielder. If the Eagles needed a smaller defence against the Western Bulldogs then Sheppard or Bennell could play. Josh Hill has been squeezed out due to the form and flexibility that Jamie Cripps provides. - Alex Malcolm

Western Bulldogs

B: Dale Morris, Jordan Roughead, Brett Goodes
HB: Jason Johannisen, Michael Talia, Liam Picken
C: Easton Wood, Ryan Griffen, Jack Macrae
HF: Koby Stevens, Stewart Crameri, Adam Cooney
F: Shaun Higgins, Tom Campbell, Luke Dahlhaus
FOLL: Will Minson, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore
INT: Tory Dickson, Jake Stringer, Matthew Boyd
SUB: Daniel Giansiracusa

A starring role in the Bulldogs' practice match win over Carlton has but assured injury-prone playmaker Shaun Higgins of a opening round berth. That now only leaves Bob Murphy (elbow) and Tom Williams (match fitness) as best 22 players likely to be unavailable for the clash with West Coast. Liam Picken or Daniel Pearce look likely cover for Murphy across half-back while the Dogs may go small up forward with doubts on Williams and Liam Jones seemingly out of favour so far in 2014. Teenagers Jake Stringer and Lachy Hunter both have strong cases after impressive NAB Challenge campaigns for spots in attack alongside boom acquisition Stewart Crameri. - Ryan Davidson
