Set to come out of contract at the end of this season, Johnson and the Cats have agreed to add another year on to his current playing arrangement.
The 215-game star would have been one of the most sought after unrestricted free agents in the competition at the end of this season, but the new deal means he will almost certainly finish his career in the blue and white hoops.

The two parties finalised the terms of the contract this week.
"I love playing footy here and I really couldn't think of playing anywhere else so it is a very easy decision," Johnson told geelongcats.com.au
Cats football manager Neil Balme said he was thrilled with the immediacy of Johnson's re-signing.
"It's terrific we have been able to wrap this up so quickly. Steve is obviously an important player and he and the club were keen to get this resolved and we have been able to do it. We are looking forward to Steve having another great season for us," Balme said.

The 30-year-old achieved career-high numbers in disposals and contested possessions in 2013 and he said he was excited by the future of the club.
"I love the young players that are coming through and I think the club is in a positive position to even take steps forward again this year."
Johnson, who almost became a Collingwood player in 2006 - only to be passed up because of concerns around his ankle – believes he is in great shape as he enters his 13th season in the League.
"Feeling really good, to be honest. I'm probably training more again this year, than what I have in years gone by.
"I'm learning to deal with my body a little bit better, I'm better with my rehab and the club certainly looks after the older players, so there's no reason why I can't improve again this season."
