WEST Coast remains confident midfielder Luke Shuey will be fit to face Melbourne on Sunday at the MCG despite limping at training on Tuesday.

Shuey, 23, was subbed out of Sunday's 65-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Patersons Stadium at three-quarter time after suffering a minor ankle injury.

Coach Adam Simpson admitted afterwards the plan was always to cut Shuey's game time in the season opener but that was because of a sore calf.

He missed training sessions in the lead-up to the game against the Dogs because of the calf, and then reportedly hobbled through a few laps of Patersons Stadium on Tuesday.

Although he is likely to have a fitness test before the team travels to Melbourne this weekend, the Eagles remain confident he'll be right to face the Demons.

"He was under consideration [to be subbed] at the start of the game, given that he'd pulled up a little bit sore from his last hit-out," West Coast physio Paul Tucker told the club's website.

"Given that he had a little bit of ankle pain that was bothering him, he was the logical sub on the day."

Meanwhile, the Demons have more big men problems with Tom McDonald (corked thigh) and Jack Fitzpatrick (concussion) rated only a chance to play.

Already without Mitch Clark, Mark Jamar, Chris Dawes, Jesse Hogan and Max Gawn, the absence of the two would further stretch the Dees for tall options.

Fitzpatrick failed to come back on after being concussed in the first half against St Kilda on Saturday night while McDonald was badly corked and struggled to keep up with Nick Riewoldt after half time.

"[Fitzpatrick] will be closely monitored during the week and a decision will be made at the end of the week in regard to him," elite performance manager Dave Misson told Dee TV.

"McDonald got a cork on a cork during the game, on a spot where he had a pretty bad one from the Alice Springs game.

"He's actually pulled up pretty well and we're hoping Tom's going to get up this week. He'll be pretty quiet during the week, but we're hoping he'll play."

Jamar and Colin Garland are expected to be available next weekend for either VFL or AFL while Jordie McKenzie is in the frame for selection for Sunday.

However, Dawes and Hogan are not expected to return until mid-to-late April and Clark remains indefinite.
